History of the Ancient City of Megara Hyblaea, Sicily

The ancient city of Megara Hyblaea is situated in south-east Sicily near Syracuse. It is popular with visitors hoping to learn a little of the ancient Greeks and their customs, and a history of the city is useful to help you make the most of your visit.

Megara Hyblaea was founded in the second half of the eighth century BC (according to tradition in 728 BC) by Dorian settlers, in an area where some existing Sicilian populations had already built their settlement called Hybla. Note: historically there were several places in Sicily that were called Hybla (eg Hybla Gereatide, Hybla Erea and Hybla Mègara) and it is not always clear which 'Hybla' the records are referring to.

AUGUSTA

According to tradition, the founder of Megara, around the Gulf of Augusta, was King Hyblon, who welcomed the Megarians to his territory (although other sources suggest he had little choice...), who then founded Megara. It is said that the first inhabitants, known as Galeoti (who were believers of Apollo) were very adept at predicting the future, interpreting dreams and performing acts of magic and also that they were very superstitious.

The city developed with considerable attention to details and planning, with individual lots being entrusted to citizens for private homes each of the same size, while the Agorà was a free site set aside as a place of public assemblies (a model followed by the bastide town of south-west France 1600 years later).

The first development of Megara Hyblaea was so successful that the newcomers, a century later (628 BC), founded another very important city at Selinunte, another Greek outpost in south-western Sicily. The city based its business on the production of ceramics and on sea trade.

The Megara Hyblaea site has been identified in the plain of San Cusumano between Augusta and Melilli, and has provided many important archaeological remains (eg some traces of an ancient fortified village of the Neolithic period, foundations of three temples and ruins of a large building, city-walls and two necropolis).

From these it is clear that the city had a period of great splendour in the sixth century BC.

Over the centuries Megara Hyblaea had several difficult moments; and, in fact, was destroyed (about 482 BC) by Hiero (?-466), the tyrant of Syracuse. Reconstruction took place under Timoleon in the 4th century BC. The city was again destroyed by the Roman consul Marcellus in 213 BC who was besieging Syracuse at the time. According to tradition (but disputed by some scholars) Emperor Augustus (63 B.C.-14 A.D.) then rebuilt Megara and gave it the name of Augusta. This new city, however, did not arise exactly on the site of Megara Hyblaea, but rather it was built nearby where today we find the centre of Augusta and its imposing castle.

Nook Vs Kindle 3 Review and Comparison

Amazon Kindle and Barnes & Noble Nook are the two serious contenders for the title of best e-reader. There are other electronic reading devices on the market, but Kindle and Nook dominate the scene while the others are fading further into the background. So, this is going to be a straight review and comparison of Nook and Kindle as the two market leaders.

barnes and noble coupon

Since the launch of the first models of Nook and Kindle, the enhancements of each subsequent version have brought the two contenders closer. It is harder than ever to make a decision as to whether to buy the new Amazon Kindle or the latest Nook. The two models under scrutiny here are the Kindle 3G (+Wi-Fi) and the Nook (Wi-Fi +3G).

BARNES AND NOBLE

Any attempt to compare and contrast Amazon's Kindle 3 and B&N's Nook is bound to highlight their similarities rather than underline any differences. The two e-readers are the same size to within a fraction of an inch. They are the same weight to within a couple of ounces. The battery life of each of them is 10 days of reading.

The Manufacturers' refinements to these two devices have made it very difficult to place either brand in top place. People looking to buy an e-reader have been swayed first towards the Kindle, then towards the Nook and back again. The competition is closer than ever with the two models we are looking at today. It is simply not possible to say that one is obviously superior to the other. So how do you decide on a winner in the Nook vs Kindle battle?

The selection of an e-reader is very much a matter of personal choice. The best way to approach a review of Amazon's Kindle 3 and the Barnes & Noble Nook is to consider how you will use a reading device. How much do you read, what do you read, where do you read? With a clear idea of the way you want to use the reader, you can make a choice on the basis of the following features of each device.

1. International travel. Do you want to be able to download reading matter overseas? The Nook only works within the United States. The Kindle 3 enables you to download books in over 100 countries via GSM network. You can, however, use both of them anywhere in the world to read books you have already downloaded.

2. Weight. The Kindle 3 is lighter (and slightly smaller) than the Nook. The difference is only a couple of ounces, but this might be important to you if you travel a lot.

3. Navigation. The Kindle has push button navigation only. The Nook has touch-screen navigation. Which makes you more comfortable?

4. Memory size. The Kindle 3 can hold up to 3,500 books. The Nook can hold up to 1,500 books. (However, the Nook has an expansion slot to expand the memory if you want to.)

5. Color screen. One other notable difference between the Kindle and the Nook is that the latter offers a color screen. This might not seem of great benefit in a reader, but this feature might be something you would prefer.

Either of these devices will prove to be excellent value for money. The ongoing competition between the two manufacturers has ensured that the quality of the products keeps going up while the prices are kept down. The choice is yours, and you can't lose.

Sell Books on eBay and Amazon

This just happened to me, yes, this is a true story, but I just wanted to share it with you.

barnes and noble book

I have a bad back at the moment so I just logged into my local library to see if they had any books about treating a bad back. They had a few and this one was amongst them.

BARNES AND NOBLE

'Shoulder Arthrography' by Amy Beth Guildman. Well I got to admit that I have never heard of her or the book (no disrespect intended). Anyway I thought that rather than borrow it from the library that I would buy one instead.

So I logged on to Amazon and entered the title and Authors name in, and the book new is .11 and they also have six used versions in stock the cheapest is .89 and the dearest is 4 (So I am going to get mine from the library).

But guess what? Our local libraries have a sale once a month of books and they really don't have a clue what they are worth, and they don't seem to care either because the sale is held by volunteers just to raise money for the library.

So the thought came to mind that one of the easiest topics for any one hoping to get started at selling online would be to sell books on eBay and Amazon, I have sold many over the years so just maybe this category might appeal to you also.

Just as an afterthought I should like to add this;

I went to Barnes and Nobles on Sunday (I love that store, nice cup of coffee and a cake) anyway in the entrance (or exit? Call it what you will) they had some Classic books, you know the kind of thing, Moby Dick, Wuthering Heights, A Tale of Two Cities, that sort of stuff, and they were each. Now admittedly they were well presented and nicely bound, but, they are totally worthless.

They are all out of copyright, there are millions of them on the market, and I could print some and sell them myself if I wanted to (and if I knew how to do it).

So you may be asking "what has this got to do with me making money?" a good question, so I will tell you....

Everything!!

Timing is everything.....

People are buying now,... because the 'trends' season is over, Thanksgiving is long gone and so is Christmas, summer is still on the horizon.

Garage sales, thrift shops, and countless other outlets are very active in the early spring and summer months and books both for sale and to sell are everywhere..

Selling books is a business that you have complete control over, there is very little competition when it comes to selling used books, believe me, this is nothing like selling new books. You have complete control;

There are never any suppliers or deliveries to worry about There are never any breakages (easy to pack) You trade only with people who want what you have Very good profit margins (you set them) Easy research (just check out Amazon, Borders, Barnes and Nobles) and of course eBays own completed listings site to see how many copies of that particular book have been sold in the last 14 days and for how much.

Everyone has books in their home, this is a very respected business to be in and you can buy and sell the products almost anywhere in the world.

It can be very difficult to buy new products and then sell them on eBay for a 200% markup but in fact this is what you need to do if you want to sell on eBay at a decent profit. If you buy a product for two dollars and sell it for four dollars by the time that you have paid eBay you will have very little if anything left, but if you can sell it for six dollars then you will have about four dollars left after you pay eBay (your original two dollars plus profit) that's about a 100% profit.

That is just an example to give you a sense of perspective.

Also bear in mind that about 50% of the items submitted for sale on eBay do not sell the first time, so they have to be re-submitted, but for once with eBays new policy coming into effect in July this may work to the advantage of the sellers.

Kindle Fire Vs Nook Color - New Color eBook Readers Go Head To Head - Which Is Best?

Amazon has officially announced the release of the Kindle Fire, a color ebook reader that doubles as a tablet PC. Barnes and Noble released their Nook Color, a similar device, last holiday season. It makes sense to compare these two devices as they are similar in price. But what about other features? Let's compare the Kindle Fire vs Nook Color and find the differences.

The Nook Color Main Features

BARNES AND NOBLE

7" ISP Color Touch Screen Web browsing- Customized Android, email program 8GB memory, with expandable SD card slot 729 Apps available from B and N store 8 hour battery life 8.1″ x 5″ x.48" Can play video, music, other multimedia

Kindle Fire Main Features

7" ISP Color Touch Screen Web browsing capabilities- Amazon Silk browser 8 GB memory with CS2 Cloud backup/expanded storage 16,638 Apps available from Amazon.com 8 hour battery life 7.5″ x 4.7″ x.45″ Can play video, music, other multimedia

Taking a look at the main features of the Kindle Fire and Nook Color, one sees that there are a few glaring differences. One can see that Barnes and Noble offers 729 apps versus 16,638 apps at Amazon. This reflects the main difference between the two devices, in the way that Amazon just offers more content than Barnes and Noble.

Barnes and Noble has made it clear from the beginning that the Nook Color is a "color ebook reader" and they want to focus on the reading with their device. There has been customer complaints that it is slow to respond with certain things such as watching videos online. Again, it's a color ebook reader. It excels with reading magazines and other color publications.

Amazon aims to take a slightly different approach with the Kindle Fire. They advertise the device as more of a tablet PC than just a color ebook reader. This is evident with the extensive discussion about the new "Silk" web browser, according to Amazon, is a much faster mobile web browsing experience that uses Cloud technology to aid in web page load time.

Cloud Storage vs On Device Storage

Another big difference between the Fire and Nook Color is the way content is stored on the device, or off the device. Nook Color offers 8 GB of on-device storage out of the box, with the ability to expand storage up to 32 GB with an SD card. The Fire is different with 8 GB on-device storage out of the box, with unlimited use of the Amazon EC2 Cloud to backup and store as many files as the user needs or wants.

When comparing the Kindle Fire vs Nook Color, one can see there are many differences despite looking like very similar devices at first glance. Amazon's device could be seen as more a Tablet PC than Barnes and Noble's device which is a self declared color ebook reader.

Foreign Movies Vs Home Videos In Nigeria

Indian movies such as "Sholay", "Amar Akbar Anthony", Chinese movies including Fist of Fury, Enter the Dragon, The Game of Death reigned in the 70's into the 80's era. Nigerian film makers such as Ola Balogun, Eddie Ugbomah, late Herbert Ogunde, Adeyemi Afolayan, Afolabi Adesanya produced films on celluloid, especially during the 70's. Films such as Bull Frog in the Sun, Ajani Ogun, Muzik Man, Bisi, Daughter of the River, Ija Ominira, Aiye were viewed by Nigerians.

However, many Nigerians preferred the foreign films to the local ones. In the late 80's into the 90's, VCRs stormed the country, resulting in the dearth of cine films from our founding film makers. Ken Nebue's, "Living in bondage" in 1992, paved the way for Nollywood a.k.a "The Nigerian home video industry" which has metamorphosed into a multi million naira industry.

AUGUSTA

Preference now shifted to the home videos, being made by Nigerians for Nigerians and in general Africans, with the avenue to tell our stories. However, the charlatan invasion, low ebbed professionalism, shamy productions, flawed stories, amongst others has made the industry a shadow of itself. The Ghanaian invasion of its actors and actresses into the industry, coupled with the problems of piracy, despite the new distribution framework most marketers are yet to strictly comply, with have not helped matters.

The Silver Bird galleria which houses the cinema, NU metro and Genesis Deluxe cinemas show dominantly Hollywood movies, and with the availability of DVDs of foreign flicks around the corner, down the street, the choice pendulum has once again swung to the foreign flicks. Foreign flicks offer a wide genre of movies ranging from Action, Comedy, Romance, Thriller, Science-fiction, Animation, Mystery, Film-noir, to Violence, Adventure, Crime, Suspense, Drama, Musical, Horror and Fantasy have good special, visual, sound effects, amongst others.

Although a few Nollywood film makers have upped their game to swing in the direction of the international standard, Home videos generally fall below the set quality standard. Time will however tell whether the Home videos will once again dominate the Nigerian movie market.

So long... auggiepo@yahoo.com
