Ingento Maple Desktop Paper Cutters Still Around and Still the Same

If you have been in the workroom of almost any school in the past ten years, chances are you have seen an Ingento Maple Trimmer. These excellent quality paper cutters consist of a hardwood maple surface with a ruler for determining measurements and a Guillotine Style Cutting blade. They do what they are designed to do and interestingly enough haven't really changed in years.

A few weeks ago, a local customer of mine asked me to help them replace their old Ingento Maple trimmer. Their 12" x 12" Ingento Maple trimmer was more than twenty years old and the blade had been sharpened so many times that there was hardly any metal left. It was definitely time for a new cutter. I went ahead and ordered them a brand new GBC Ingento CL500m Maple Trimmer. Much to my surprise when the cutter arrived and I took it out of the box, the new CL500m was identical to the twenty year old trimmer. The design hadn't changed.

BARNES AND NOBLE

All of the Ingento maple trimmers include a self sharpening hardened steel blade, a steel tension spring to secure the blade in any position, a protective guard rail, a latch hook to lock the blade in place, an alignment grid and ruler as well as a 10 year warranty. If you are looking for a guillotine style paper cutter the Ingento is the way to go. Thousands of other Paper Cutters have come and gone and the Ingento is the same great cutter as it has always been. Don't settle for anything less than the best. Choose GBC Ingento.

Color Nook Ebook Reader? Mystery Solved

There are many different ebook readers from which you can choose from, but why is it that only two seem to wind up standing out? I'll bet you know which ones I'm talking about. The Barnes & Noble ebook reader and the Kindle ebook reader. Call me a product of my environment but I have come to trust both of these names. Why? Because when I think of books I think of Barnes & Noble and I think of Amazon.com who owns Kindle. I know these people sell books. They sell more books than any one, so I know I'm not going to be buying an ereader that I can't get books for. Mystery number one, solved.

barnesandnoble.com

So What Is The Difference?

BARNES AND NOBLE

In a brutal battle to develop supremacy in the ebook market, these two giants wield distinctly different technological clubs. Amazon is a tireless brute who in it's bid to strangle the Nook and dominate the market employs the mobi format. This is the same technology used to power up the mobi pocket reader, which Amazon owns. Amazon employs the mobi format and incorporates a file extension for protecting Copy righted material or DRM which stand for digital rights management, so the Kindle has a unique file extension, a hybrid of the two if you will, aptly referred to as .amz. Barnes & Noble uses the epub format which is the standard used by the international digital publishing forum and is short for electronic publication. This is the more widely used format by epublishers but again the Nook also incorporates a file extension for protecting copy righted material. Whew!? So what does this mean to you? These devices will not get along and you will buy books from Amazon if you buy Kindle. You will buy books from Barnes & Noble if buy Nook. Mystery number two, solved.

Why Can't They All Just Get Along?

Inconsistencies in a common ability to down load content has been the hindrance to the ereader since its inception. Assuring that the authors and publishers are compensated for their material is just fair, but the confusion for the consumer is absolutely fatiguing. There are many of us who have trouble getting the "dang thing" to turn on. How can we possibly be expected to understand how to interpret the available file extensions for down loading material from each e reader. We can not. So we know Kindle works and in Amazon we trust, and we know Barnes & Noble is THE place to get books, so who better to trust for an ereader? Mystery three, solved.

Finally, Which one is best?

Both of these products are good. Darn good. You can get about the same number of books from either of them. Both offer good black and white readers, although I tend to lean towards the Nooks because of the file formats provide a more abundant outside source for downloading. For me the answer is simple. I like to read but I like being able to read color magazines. I like to stay connected and the color Nook's built in wifi does just that. It is a nice balance between traditional reading and modern survival tools like an interactive children's book with sound and animation when the traffic backs up, email, web browsing, games, Pandora radio, and lots of apps. For me there is no mystery, the color Nook is a great choice.

The Use Of Indigenous Language Vs English In Nollywood Movies

The English language no doubt is our lingua franca in Nigeria, amidst a backdrop of about 250 diverse ethnic groups opting to communicate in their mother tongue. Movies have been part of our lives since its inception in August 1903 at the Glover memorial hall. Over the years, foreign flicks have dominated the Nigerian movie market and flooded our TV screens. In the 70's and 80's, Indian and Chinese films had a firm grip on the movie market, especially with the fact that though the actors dialogued in their native tongue we could still follow the unfolding trends courtesy of the good subtitling techniques. The British with the James Bond 007 movies struggled against those movies. However, from the 90's to present day, I've witnessed a dramatic twist in preference for Hollywood movies based not only on the use of English language as the means of communication, but also on the wider genres, cross appeal story lines, embodiment of all effects, with cutting edge technology at their disposal.

Nollywood generally embraces movies shot in the English, Yoruba and Hausa languages irrespective of the differences some have opined exist that lauds only the English language made movies to come under the ambit of Nollywood. Even the movies produced by the Hausa folks have been done under the auspices of Kannywood (which they refer to as their own movie industry) which of course is rather preposterous and an erroneous belief. Nollywood represents the entire movie Industry within the territorial jurisdiction of Nigeria and it is absurd when people subtly create distinctive platforms for Yoruba / Hausa productions.

AUGUSTA

Movies produced in English are sold rapidly based as earlier stated on the fact that they are produced in our lingua franca which majority of Nigerians can understand. They are also exported to other English speaking African countries, North America and parts of Europe. As a result the viewership base is enormous unlike those produced in indigenous languages. Yoruba movies have been on since the 70's / 80's, but its movies are restricted to those who are Yoruba indigenes or non-Yorubas who understand the language. Imagine producing a movie for a single tribe as against over 200, certainly only those who can speak the language will buy it, besides, poor subtitling in the movies makes it really hard to follow the story line.

Yoruba movies have the highest quantity output in comparison with movies made in other indigenous languages and follows closely on the heels of the English speaking ones. Their stories powerfully reflect their culture, traditional beliefs and heritage, which messages wouldn't be effectively conveyed if produced in the English language. The only way they can recoup their investments and enjoy a wider audience viewership base while maintaining their Indigenous language flow is to ensure good subtitling as seen in Bollywood and Chinese movies. Defective subtitling has been the bane of the problem as most Yoruba movies (as they are loosely called), have a high level of subtitling defects including incomplete subtitled dialogues. This easily puts off non-indigenes watching the movies who do not understand the language.

Good effective subtitling is the hallmark of Bollywood movies. It is rare to watch a Bollywood movie purely spoken in English. They believe in using their indigenous language to effectively convey the message home. An Ardent believer of the Indigenous school of thought for movie productions in Nigeria, is Nollywood's legend Tunde Kelani, the pioneer of Main frame productions. He has over the years used his wealth of experience with regards to film making to produce outstanding movies using the Yoruba language. His insistence for sticking to the use of indigenous language stems from his cultural background which influenced his childhood and growing up years.

He believes that the Yoruba culture would soon be extinct especially with the use of the English language and lifestyle being foremost adopted by this generation, relegating the Yoruba language and culture to the background. He believes that you can't speak the English language better than the English/Americans, themselves, so why bother to make movies in the English language?. He however adopts good subtitling techniques for non-Yoruba indigenes to understand. The younger generation of filmmakers have also followed suit such as Kunle Afolayan (Irapada, The Figurine, araromire (blend of Yoruba and English ), Daniel Ademinokan (Omo Iya Kan ).

Despite the presence of subtitles, most viewers are unwilling to watch movies produced in the Indigenous language as against those in English. It is worthy of note that movies using the indigenous languages have begun to make impact in the USA, Europe and at the Oscars. Slum dog millionaire attests to that. Bollywood does not compromise its deployment of indigenous language which has become its trade mark. It's not the language that really counts but the combination of all the relevant elements needed in producing a mind blowing movie. At the end of the day, it's really a matter of choice open to filmmakers, to decide which of the languages would appeal to the audience and powerfully send the theme of the story across to them.

Through languages, messages are effectively communicated to the recipient. Whatever language the film maker decides to use, the most important thing is to ask himself whether the theme, plot, the essence of the production, would ultimately be understood and appreciated by the teeming viewers. Where he satisfies himself that it does, then he should produce same in the language of his choice, irrespective of what others might think or say. After all, it's the returns on investments, popularity of the movie and achievements recorded that counts at the end of the day!

How to Care for Your Leather Clothing

Remember Leather is a living breathing fabric, and as such it's care is different form other fabrics. Leather has stood the test of time as one of the most durable and functionable materials available.

This means you should not leave your leather garments in a plastic garment bag! It can't breathe, and will cause the leather to dry out. Opt for a cloth cover instead.

AUGUSTA

If you absolutely must iron the item, set the iron on the lowest possible setting. Never use steam! Place a heavy brown grocery bag, or some felt paper on between the garment and the iron. Iron quicky, and avoid overheating!

Professional leather cleaning is recommended for all leathers, and fabric garments trimmed with leather. Normal dry cleaning methods will not yield proper results. Clean matching garments at the same time, since a slight variation is color or texture may occur as a natural result of the cleaning process. Natural marks and wrinkles could become more apparent after cleaning. Garment may shrink slightly, but will stretch again with wear. Professionally applied water and stain repellent products are often available.

Leather is designed to last a lifetime, and with proper care right from the start, it will.

Always hang leather clothing on wide or padded hangers to keep their shape. Allow wet or damp leather to air-dry naturally away from any heat source. Leather can be treated with a conditioner to restore flexibility. In bad weather, promptly remove salt deposits from leather clothing by sponging with clear water. Use caution when using products to clean your leather, leather clothing must breathe, so avoid waxes, or silicone products. Test all cleaning and restoration agents in a small inconspicuous portion of the garment. Hems and small rips or tears, may be fixed with a tiny amount of rubber cement or sewn with a leather needle. For best results see a seamstress that specializes in leather. The merchant where you purchased the leather garment may have more information on care, and should be able to help you with specific questions. You may always feel free to email us with any question you have wether you purchased from us or not.

Kindle 3 Vs Nook

There are two positively reviewed e-readers dominating the market. The Amazon Kindle comes with years of experience, improvements and new releases against the newer Barnes & Noble Nook.

barnes and noble

When buyers look and hold the two e-readers for the first time, the differences are already noticeable. The Kindle is thin, weighs 8.7 ounces, has a six-inch screen, and has a keyboard. The Nook is thicker, weighs 11.6 ounces, has a six-inch screen, and has a touchscreen.

BARNES AND NOBLE

Both products have e-Ink technology, making their screens mock the appearance of paper and reducing eye stress. The Nook also has a version called the Nook Color, which has a seven-inch LCD screen.

When considering the purchase of either the 9 and up Kindle or the 9 and up Nook, buyers will also consider features and usability. Both products have a dictionary, note making tool, and highlight option. The Nook, however, has many other multimedia related features including a music player.

With the Nook, users can lend books to friends and family for as long as two weeks. The Kindle may have fewer features, but this allows it to boast a much faster speed. Both products offer enormous libraries, but the Nook offers lower prices.

The Amazon Kindle was released in 2007 and is a tried-and-true e-reader. The product is loaded with appropriate features that lend to a more pleasurable reading experience. Almost every e-reader buying checklist includes low price, high speed, maximum portability, large library, internet access, and e-Ink, and the Kindle satisfies every qualification.

As Kindle owners get to know their e-reader, they will find new uses for each feature and absolute minimal frustration. This bug-free and beautiful e-reader is the right choice for almost every user.

Nook Vs Kindle Vs iPad - The Works!

In the world of ebook readers, the common comparison has always been between Nook vs Kindle vs iPad.

barnesandnoble.com

If you want to make sure that you get what you pay for, then you are also likely to ask, "Should I buy an iPad? Or a Kindle? Or maybe a Nook?

BARNES AND NOBLE

To help you make your decision, I've put down a list of Nook vs Kindle vs iPad facts.

To compare Nook, Kindle, iPad, check the following facts:

1. Price: When it comes to price, Nook and Kindle are head to head, with both prices ranging from 0-0. Apple iPad on the other hand costs around 0-0. Nook could be slightly more expensive than Kindle because Barnes & Noble sometimes charge taxes in their deployed locations while Amazon Kindle doesn't. Thus when it comes to price, Kindle has it.

2. Battery Life: Once again Kindle is leading when it comes to battery life. It can last up to 2 weeks while iPad can last only up to 12 hours and Nook only lasts 10 hours.

3. Storage: If you compare Nook vs iPad vs Kindle in terms of storage, then the sure winner will be Barnes & Noble's Nook. Aside from its 500,000 built-in storage, it comes with a microSD slot that expands the Nook's external memory, allowing you to store more eBooks to your liking. Kindle has a capacity of 450,000 books (2GB), while iPad can only have 60,000 books.

4. Content: Thumbs up will be for Amazon Kindle. Although it is 50,000 short of titles compared to Nook, most reviews favor Kindle because it offers titles that are more in demand to readers. iPad lags behind as it doesn't have too many books to compete.

5. Portability / Size and weight: Thinking about Nook vs iPad vs Kindle when it comes to size and weight, the leading model once again would be Kindle. It only weighs 10.2-ounces and has a 0.36-in thinness. Nook weight 12.1-ounces and is 0.5-in thick. iPad on the other hand is big and bulky for the traveling reader, weighing almost 1.5-lbs.

6. Connectivity: The comparison is hard between Kindle and Nook. Currently the device that has the better connectivity is Nook as it both has 3G and Wi-Fi, plus it can be in sync with other devices through Android-technology. Kindle2 though has International Wireless Capability, and soon there will also be a Kindle-Android.

7. Touch Screen: iPad has the most advantage when it comes to screen features. It rates high in color, resolution and touch-screen ability. Nook is also colored and touch-screen though. And Kindle is black-and-white and not at all touch-screen.

8. Readability: Kindle is said to be more reader-friendly because aside from its electronic ink, its contrast is so much better compared to Nook and iPad. Both the screens of Nook and iPad could be glary, thus could be faulty when reading on direct sunlight or during nighttime.

9.Text-to-speech: Kindle and iPad competes fairly as both have text-to-speech features; Nook doesn't.

10. Other Nook vs Kindle vs iPad considerations: Nook has book lending and in-store browsing options. iPad has web browsing, email sending, and even gaming capabilities.

The End of Pompeii and Herculaneum (August 24-25, A.D. 79) Part 2 of 3

As the residents of Herculaneum and Pompeii pursued their daily activities, a few wisps of smoke trickled from Vesuvius’ crater at approximately 10:00 AM.[27] It went unseen.

barnes and noble tablet

Next, at about 12:00 noon a steady, unbroken plume of smoke suddenly rose 9 miles into the air from Mt. Vesuvius as tremors rattled Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis, Terzigno, and their surroundings. “In Campania, remarkable and frightful occurrences took place; for a great fire suddenly flared up at the very end of the summer. It happened on the wise Mt. Vesuvius,” Dio Cassius wrote in describing the eruption.[28]

BARNES AND NOBLE

Initially upon seeing the towering noontime volcanic column, people were awed and astonished. Then, within minutes as a thick rain of hot lapilli (Latin term for “small stones”),[29] pumice and ash began to fall on Pompeii, Oplontis, and Terzigno, carried by strong northwest winds pushing it to the southeast, the towns’ people hurriedly sought immediate shelter.

Soon the hot lapilli and ash were falling at a rate of about 4.75-6 inches per hour as deafening noises emanated from the volcano and a continuous stream of strong earthquakes shook the area. Upon hearing the loud explosions, many who had not left in the morning, fled back into their houses as others continued their retreat towards Pompeii and the coast of Oplontis, and as “pumice clasts comprised of tephra” with diameters of up to 3 inches rained down at speeds of up to 62 miles per hour, roofs and structures suffered damage while people in the streets suffered injuries, a few fatal.[30]

By 1:00 PM, “the carapace of rock sealing [Vesuvius] was blown out”[31] shooting some 10 miles into the air,[32] sending up a thick, dark cloud of dust and ash that blocked the sun, casting Pompeii and its surrounding areas into total darkness. “…suddenly a portentous crash was heard, as if the mountains were tumbling in ruins; and first huge stones were hurled aloft, rising as high as the very summits, then came a great quantity of fire and endless smoke, so that the whole atmosphere was obscured and the sun was entirely hidden, as if eclipsed. Thus day was turned into night and light into darkness,” Dio Cassius wrote.[33]

When darkness enveloped the area as hot lapilli and ash rained down, many in Herculaneum realized it was time to flee. People “stopped to gather what belongings they could: money, jewelry, the family dog. Everybody rushed into the streets. Some thought the sea was their route to safety; those who didn’t try to escape on boats assembled on the beach”[34] while others fled on foot towards Naples, “which ultimately proved to be the only path to safety.”[35]

There was widespread panic and chaos as people ran for safety. As they fled, in the words of Dio Cassius, “some [ran] from the houses into the streets, others from outside into the houses, now from the sea to the land and now from the land to the sea; for in their excitement they regarded any place where they were not as safer than where they were. [Furthermore] While this was going on, an inconceivable quantity of ashes was blown out, which covered both sea and land and filled all the air. It wrought much injury of various kinds, as chance befell, to men and farms and cattle, and in particular it destroyed all fish and birds.”[36]

It was about this time that Pliny the Elder, serving in Misenum as admiral of the fleet was notified of the eruption as recounted by his son: “…between 2 and 3 in the afternoon my mother drew his attention to a cloud of unusual size and appearance. He had had a sunbath, then a cold bath, and was reclining after dinner with his books. He called for his shoes and climbed up to where he could get the best view of the phenomenon. The cloud was rising from a mountain-at such a distance we couldn't tell which, but afterwards learned that it was Vesuvius. I can best describe its shape by likening it to a pine tree. It rose into the sky on a very long ‘trunk’ from which spread some ‘branches.’ I imagine it had been raised by a sudden blast, which then weakened, leaving the cloud unsupported so that its own weight caused it to spread sideways. Some of the cloud was white, in other parts there were dark patches of dirt and ash. The sight of it made the scientist in my uncle determined to see it from closer at hand.

He ordered a boat made ready. He offered me the opportunity of going along, but I preferred to study – he himself happened to have set me a writing exercise. As he was leaving the house he was brought a letter from Tascius' wife Rectina, who was terrified by the looming danger. Her villa lay at the foot of Vesuvius, and there was no way out except by boat. She begged him to get her away. He changed his plans. The expedition that started out as a quest for knowledge now called for courage. He launched the quadriremes and embarked himself, a source of aid for more people than just Rectina, for that delightful shore was a populous one. He hurried to a place from which others were fleeing, and held his course directly into danger. Was he afraid? It seems not, as he kept up a continuous observation of the various movements and shapes of that evil cloud, dictating what he saw.

Ash was falling onto the ships now, darker and denser the closer they went. Now it was bits of pumice, and rocks that were blackened and burned and shattered by the fire. Now the sea is shoal; debris from the mountain blocks the shore. He paused for a moment wondering whether to turn back as the helmsman urged him. ‘Fortune helps the brave,’ he said, ‘Head for Pomponianus (his friend).’"[37] With his decision, Pliny the Elder ordered the helmsmen to turn away from Pompeii, which was inaccessible and head for Stabiae.[38]

By 3:00 PM some of the residents of Pompeii were also fleeing as they realized the earthquakes and eruption weren’t ceasing. People “ran in different directions; some Pompeiians [sought] refuge in Moregine. Others head[ed] in the direction of… Nuceria. And still others [fled] to the seaport…”[39] Soon it became apparent that “an escape by sea [was] futile.”[40]

However, by 6:00 PM, the volcanic eruption appeared to be easing. As the eruption’s intensity eased, exhausted Pompeiian survivors emerged from buildings in search of an escape route. Individually and in small groups, “they trudged towards the southern sector of the urban area in the hope of reaching the roads at the edge of the city.”[41] By this time, Pliny the Elder had arrived at Stabiae to meet up with his friend. By this time, Pliny the Younger was completing his studies from the safety of Misenum. “…I finished up my studies, as I had planned. Then I had a bath, then dinner and a short and unsatisfactory night.”[42] At the same time, some, mistakenly believing that the worst was over, began returning to survey the damage and salvage their belongings.

By 7:30 PM, Pompeii experienced the first roof collapses. In addition, a few fires, caused by “fallen lanterns,” burned, illuminating the town in the “unnatural darkness.”[43]

Then after about two hours of respite, shortly after 8:00 PM, the intensity of the volcanic eruption picked up. Falling lapilli and ash again rained down. As it fell on Pompeii and Stabiae, Pliny the Elder was awaiting favorable winds to depart” as recounted by his son: “At Stabiae, on the other side of the bay formed by the gradually curving shore, Pomponianus had loaded up his ships even before the danger arrived, though it was visible and indeed extremely close, once it intensified. He planned to put out as soon as the contrary wind let up. That very wind carried my uncle right in, and he embraced the frightened man and gave him comfort and courage. In order to lessen the other's fear by showing his own unconcern he asked to be taken to the baths. He bathed and dined, carefree or at least appearing so (which is equally impressive). Meanwhile, broad sheets of flame were lighting up many parts of Vesuvius; their light and brightness were the more vivid for the darkness of the night. To alleviate people's fears my uncle claimed that the flames came from the deserted homes of farmers who had left in a panic with the hearth fires still alight. Then he rested, and gave every indication of actually sleeping; people who passed by his door heard his snores, which were rather resonant since he was a heavy man. The ground outside his room rose so high with the mixture of ash and stones that if he had spent any more time there escape would have been impossible. He got up and came out, restoring himself to Pomponianus and the others who had been unable to sleep. They discussed what to do, whether to remain under cover or to try the open air. The buildings were being rocked by a series of strong tremors, and appeared to have come loose from their foundations and to be sliding this way and that. Outside, however, there was danger from the rocks that were coming down, light and fire-consumed as these bits of pumice were. Weighing the relative dangers they chose the outdoors; in my uncle's case it was a rational decision, others just chose the alternative that frightened them the least. They tied pillows on top of their heads as protection against the shower of rock… the darkness was darker and thicker than any night. But they had torches and other lights. They decided to go down to the shore, to see from close up if anything was possible by sea. But it remained as rough and uncooperative as before. Resting in the shade of a sail he drank once or twice from the cold water he had asked for”[44] for escape by sea was impossible due to strong opposing winds.

Is the Barnes and Noble Nook eBook Reader Making Amazon Nervous?

As the competition heats up in the slot for the best eBook reader, both Barns & Noble with the new Nook, and Amazon with the Kindle are gearing up with new offerings of bright color capabilities and increased storage capacity. However, when you decide to compare eBook readers, be sure you take into consideration several different properties of each reader. There are probably a few things that you can live without, and a few others that you will certainly miss if you don't get them first time. So, what are the differences, and what should definitely be compared?

barnes and noble nook

Well, now both the Amazon Kindle and the Barnes & Noble Nook have versions where you can read books in full color print. But that may only matter if you want to use the device as a web browser. Otherwise, it doesn't make sense to spend extra for color because most of the books on the market are printed in black and white - right?

BARNES AND NOBLE

You will have a lot of choices as you begin to look around. And then there is the question of if you want to buy just an eBook reader, or if you would consider upgrading your phone to include a reader. The obvious disadvantage of a reader on your phone is that the phone screen is very small but if you read internet pages fine on your phone, it might be worth looking into. If you like larger print, you will have plenty of options, especially with the Amazon Kindle products.

The thing is, it's not all about just reading any more. The new tablets offer a huge selection of books as well as video, music, and browsing capabilities. The main advantage of the Kindle Fire is the almost endless supply of books that are available in the Amazon book store. But that too is not such a big deal anymore because the Nook also gives you access to millions of magazines and books. The new Nook tablet is now pre-loaded with Netflix and Hulu Plus for video.

As with all technology, it's not really a life or death decision. But like I said before, there are some things you might not be able to live with if you get too little of it (like storage capacity download speed, or available book titles). So be sure to do your research and pick something that works the best for you at the present time.

The Growing Popularity of E-Books and E-Guides

There are numerous electronic devices on the market that have the ability to access e-books and e-guides. Some of these electronic reading devices are the Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, Bookeen Cybook, Condor eGriver, Havon WISEreader, ICARUS Reader, iRiver Story, Kobo Reader, Samsung Papyrus and Sony Reader just to name a few. Those who benefits from electronic books
For avid readers the ability to store numerous electronic books in their e-reader and take it with them when they travel is a godsend. Some avid readers would pack a separate bag filled with books when they go on vacation, now their books are contained in one small device. Avid readers also had the problem with the storage of books they purchased; now these books are conveniently inside their e-reader instead of stacked throughout their home.

Commuters and frequent travelers benefit from e-books and e-guides which enable them to carry reading material for both business and pleasure.

Many aspiring authors may now have the chance to get their writing published in an electronic book format when before they had been turned away by the publishing company not willing to risk a large investment on the author.

For those individuals worried about the environment, electronic books do not require trees to be cut down to be made into paper.

Many college textbook publishers are providing students with an alternative to the traditional book by making textbooks available on electronic books. Students that purchase the electronic version of a book will find it less expensive, more convenient because they are not required to carry a heavy textbook in their backpack, and they will not have the frustration of reselling their used book for a fraction of the cost they paid for it no matter what condition it is in.

Individuals with vision problems also benefit from electronic books because they can adjust the text size giving them the option to read books that were never published in large print. The Best E Book Reader For Those With Macular Degeneration

Because macular degeneration results in the loss of straight ahead or central vision, reading books, newspapers or magazines becomes a challenge - but not impossible. There are many reading magnifiers and vision aids that can help a person read. However, some of the latest technology offers some great opportunities for those with vision problems - electronic book readers are one of them. E book readers offer the ability to adjust the contrast for better visibility and increase the font size for magnification. Here are some of the reasons why someone with macular degeneration may want to consider this low vision technology.

1. Font Magnification

BARNES AND NOBLE

All of the e book readers offer font magnification - which means by simply pressing a button the font adjusts to the next size. However, the Apple iPad offers zoom text - just by pinching or expanding ones fingers the text (and pictures) enlarges to almost any size.

2. Contrast Adjustment

The latest Kindle DX boasts of a 50% better contrast than the older version. The Apple iPad offers brilliant colors and good contrast but in some settings there can be some glare.

3. Portable

A wireless reading device like the Kindle readers or Barnes and Noble nook are small and lightweight - which means they are portable. There is no need for a computer. You can take it with you to your favorite reading chair or to the kitchen to open up a downloaded cook book to see a recipe. If you are traveling it can go on the plane with you or you can take it to your vacation spot or family member's house.

4. Navigation

The Barnes and Noble Nook, the Sony Touch Reader, and the Apple iPad offer touch navigation. The Kindle reader uses hard to see buttons that can make turning pages or finding books in your library a challenge.

5. Screen Size

The larger the screen the more viewing area. The screen size becomes more important for those who need to magnify the font. The Kindle DX and the Apple iPad have the largest screens at 9.7" compared to the Kindle 2 and the Nook e book reader at 6".

6. Color Screen

If you are interested in using your e book reader to read magazines or perhaps a children's book to your grandchild, a color screen is necessary. Almost all of the popular magazines are available, or will be soon, as e-magazines. Meaning your favorite magazine can be downloaded right to your electronic book reader.
Who wants to read a magazine without seeing the color pictures? I've downloaded several magazines onto my Apple iPad. The pictures are crisp and are in vivid colors. Some of the magazines, like National Geographic and Popular Science even offer interactive videos.

The only way to find out what the best ebook reader is for you, is to try one. You can try the Nook at your local Barnes and Noble store and the Apple iPad at an Apple store. Although at the time of this writing, one can try the Kindle 2 at Target, the larger version, the Kindle DX can still only be purchased through Amazon.

Nook Color Vs Kindle 3 - And the Winner Is?

Many people will find themselves in the situation of comparing the Nook Color vs Kindle 3 this holiday season and beyond, because these two ebook readers are the most prominent on the market. Barnes and Noble's new device has rocked the electronics world, and the Kindle 3 is a solid new product from Amazon. But which is the better device?

The new Nook Color boasts an IPS color touch screen that is the same technology found in Apple's iPad. You can see the screen from 178 degrees of view. The screen is anti-glare and very high resolution. The screen size is 7 inches, which is 1 inch larger than the original Nook E-Ink screen, and the Kindle 3.

BARNES AND NOBLE

Why Color? Some people may be asking themselves, why do you need color on an ebook reader? Well, for those people who like to read a lot of publications like daily newspapers and magazines, then the Nook Color could make a lot of sense. You can scroll through color pages and zoom in and out with the multi-touch feature.

Tech Specs- The memory capacity of the Nook Color is 8GB standard, and memory is expandable by adding SD cards. Try that with an iPad! The size is slightly bigger and heavier than the original Nook, and battery life is dramatically reduced because of the robust technology. You'll get only 8 hours on one charge. That's the price to pay for a color touch screen. There is only a wireless version available.

Kid's Books- Barnes and Noble is also banking on the fact that many parents will like the children's books that are now available at B and N that work on the Nook Color. These are interactive to the touch. It will be seen if this revolutionizes the children's book market or not.

All-In-One device- The Nook Color will allow you to surf the web, read color publications, read ebooks, check your email, watch movies, listen to music, and play a select few games.

The New Kindle 3 comes boasts some new features of it's own. The E-Ink screen contrast has been improved compared to the 2nd generation Kindle.

Why E-Ink Screen? Amazon claims that an E-Ink screen reduces eye strain compared to back lit devices like the Nook Color and lap top computers. Battery life is increased dramatically as well because of the lesser power draining technology. The reading screen measure 6 inches diagonally, the same size as previous versions of the Kindle.

Tech Specs- The memory capacity of the Kindle 3 is at 3,500 books. It is smaller than the previous Kindle version, and much smaller and lighter than the Nook Color, at 8.5 ounces vs 15.8 ounces. Battery life is 30 days with the wireless turned off, considerably longer than the Nook Color's 8 hours with wireless turned off. Kindle 3 offers a wireless version as well as a 3G.

An Ebook Reader...and Only an Ebook Reader- Amazon's aim with the Kindle 3 was to create a device 100% dedicated to reading ebooks. They are banking on the fact that people have multiple devices in today's world, a lap top for every day work tasks, an ebook reader for reading digital novels, etc...

The Kindle 3 has a clear advantage with some of it's features like battery life, 3G capabilities, international service, and lower price. But the Nook Color will prove to be a formidable foe this holiday season and beyond as a hot new electronic device.

It basically comes down to personal preference, your budget, and what you want to use the device for when deciding who wins between the Nook Color vs Kindle 3.
