Kindle 3 Vs Kindle 2 Vs Nook - What Are the Kindle 3 Changes? How Does it Compete With the Nook?

Amazon is aiming to shake up the ebook reader market once again by announcing the 3rd generation of the Kindle, dubbed the Kindle 3. So what can you expect to see different when comparing the Kindle 3 Vs. the Kindle 2? Here's a detailed look.

barnes and noble nook color

The Kindle 3 Vs. Kindle 2:

BARNES AND NOBLE

The new Kindle 3 will have a few different features that differ from the earlier generation.

Change #1) Updated E-Ink Reading Screen- Amazon is reporting a new "High Contrast" model of the E-Ink screen, still allowing for reading in bright lighting conditions, but according to Amazon, improved.

Change #2) Storage Space Increase- The earlier Kindle 2 model had 2G of storage, allowing for 1,500 books to be stored on the device. The Kindle 3 will effectively double the space to 3,500 books allowed.

Change #3) Different (More Compact) Design- Amazon is going for the "sleeker" look. The new model takes away 21% of the Kindle 2 design size, keeping the 6 inch reading screen the same size. This also makes for a lighter ebook reader for the Kindle 3. According to Amazon, it's now 15% lighter.

Change #4) New Reading Fonts- Amazon is adding some more fonts that they call "crisper" and more dark for easier reading.

Change #5) Improved Page Turn Time- According to Amazon, the page turn time is 20% faster now with the 3rd generation.

Change #6) QUIETER Page Turn Buttons- My husband would like to hear this point, as my clicking the page turn button has kept him from falling asleep in the past. Apparently others have been complaining about this too and Amazon has taken notice.

Change #7) Increased Battery Life- Amazon is reporting an improved battery that allows up to 1 month of reading with the wireless off. With wireless left on, the reading time is 10 days. That is an increase in about 2 weeks with wireless off, and a few days with wireless on.

Other Notable Changes) Now you can choose between 2 different colors when purchasing the Kindle (black/graphite or white). You can share passages with people on Facebook or Twitter from your device. Use Whispersync to sync your Kindle with any of your other devices (phones, laptops, etc...)

The Kindle 3 Vs Nook- How Do The Changes Stack Up Against the Nook?

Battery Life- The Kindle 3 now has a battery life (with wireless off) of about a month. The Nook is at 10 days with wireless off.

Storage Space- The Nook has a standard memory size that allows 1,500 books with an expandable memory slot for SD cards. The Kindle 3 now has a standard memory of 3,500 books.

Size/Weight- The Nook has a weight of 12.1 ounces. The Kindle 3 is 8.7 ounces, quite a difference now. The dimensions of the reading screen are the exact same for both Nook and Kindle. The size of the Nook device is 7.7" x 4.9" x.5". The Kindle is now 7.5" x 4.8" x.335".

Touch Screen Vs. Push Button Navigation- The Nook has a 1" touch screen navigation menu as well as the push-button navigation for page turning, etc. The Kindle 3 is still sticking to it's push-button technology only as the means to navigate text and titles.

Wi-Fi, 3G, and International Usage- The Nook has free Wi-Fi in AT&T hotspots and Barnes and Noble stores. 3G only works in the US. The Kindle connects free to AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots, as well as other free Wi-Fi hotspots. The Kindle works wirelessly across 100 countries and territories in the world.

So once again the ebook market is shaken up by innovation. You can see above there is quite a difference when comparing the Kindle 2 Vs. the new Kindle 3. Now the Nook vs Kindle 3 battle has begun. How will the consumer respond? Time will tell.

eReader Review - The Nook From Barnes and Noble Now With Wi-Fi and 3G

Why don't we quickly introduce the Barnes and Noble Nook Wi-Fi for you. At just 9 this device sports the 6 inch E Ink display screen in addition to a color Lcd. It has a 1.3 Gigabyte internal memory compared to the current 1 GB average among the other eReaders but its memory is expandable so no worries right now there. It weighs a bit more as compared to other devices at 11.6 ounce, most of the competition are way below that at 9 or 8 oz. Additionally there is a more expensive model priced at 9, which adds 3g to the mix. Instantly you can already learn to appreciate that for the price the device will be pretty good value for money. Visually the Nook originally is a mixture of two colors, battleship-gray and off-white however if that does not float your boat then you might change it by using different tinted backs for those that like more color in their lifestyles. One of Nook's trademark characteristics is a set of screens: one is the fundamental E Ink display and the other the LCD color touch screen that is Android-powered.

barnes and noble

Like the Kindle, the Nook is a system as opposed to simply a device, efficient at easily browsing and making one-click acquisitions and for downloading through Barnes & Noble's vast store of ebooks, newsprint as well as periodicals. What's more, the Nook's Wi-Fi connects automatically to allow you to read free excerpts from just about any ebook if you are sipping a latte at your favorite B&N store. You can also lend or borrow books at no cost, for up to 14 days. Based upon the book you're perusing, the Nook can show text in as much as 16 different different languages. For travelers, the Nook has an airplane mode that allows you to turn off 3G and Wi-Fi while traveling by air, so as not to interfere with navigation equipment. The readability factor of the Nook goes over and above other devices with 16 diverse shades of gray, 3 sorts of fonts and 5 different sizes. If we do the statistics there it would certainly end up being a bunch of options. I'm sure you can find one that's ideal match for you. Also another cool way to customize the device is by installing virtually any image via USB and assign it as your screensaver.

BARNES AND NOBLE

To the downside, it's a bit slow when it turns on and unlike some other ereaders you can't rotate the text...which is ok I suppose since a regular publication does not do that however it's odd they omitted this option. Internet browsing is also quite slow. The touch screen can also be a mite challenging so if you plan to use the virtual keyboard keep it to a minimum. What a lot of buyers value, because other eBook stores don't allow it, is you can loan or be lent ebooks with others that own a Nook. Unfortunately it's a one-time deal therefore keep that for your favorite bestest buddy!

Will The Portable EBook Reader Make Traditional Books Obsolete?

It appears to be the year of the portable eBook reader - the Amazon Kindle DX has been the fastest and best-selling gadget for quit some time with the Barnes and Noble Nook coming in at a close second. EBooks outsold traditional paper books as gifts for over a year now. However, the news has prompted much debate over the question - Will the eReader make traditional books obsolete?'

barnes and noble ereader

The Argument Against the Portable eBook Reader

BARNES AND NOBLE

The eReader is undoubtedly becoming more and more popular, there are several factors, however, that could slow the pace of it's growing popularity. First off, the price of an ereader - even the cheapest model - is many, many times more than the price of a book. On top of the reader itself, there is still the cost of each new eBook to consider. Unfortunately, the price a paper book versus an ebook...well they're just about the same price.

There is also the fact that the traditional book is a part of our history, and sometimes culture is a difficult thing to change. There are people who love the feel of a book, who love to fold down the pages and love to make notes. People love going to the libraries and roaming the bookshelves. They love seeing books in their physical form, which can never be completely replaced with the ebook.

In fact, books become an artifact from history in their own right. Some people feel that paper books have a greater lifespan than a gadget could ever have - electronics tend to break down eventually or another gadget comes along that takes their place.

The Argument for the Portable eReader

Many people say that you can't understand the experience of an eBook reader until you have one of your own. Even some of the strongest book lovers have found themselves converted to digital format, and see eBooks as the format of the future.

Indeed, many business and universities already make use of digital forms of books to help make them more accessible. Students can simply read papers and chapters from home, rather than having to go out to the library and carry heavy books back with them. Most of the major brands, including the Amazon Kindle DX and the Barnes and Noble Nook, allow for annotations - making eBook readers far more valuable than simply displaying words on a screen.

A Middle Ground?

The middle ground states that, eBook readers will continue to grow in popularity, and eBooks will become more and more widely accepted. It's doubtful that the physical book will ever be completely replaced, however, the portable eBook reader will make books more accessible, especially through the help of free libraries such as Project Gutenberg. Good news is we don't have to make a definitive decision. We can have the best of both worlds...electronic and physical books.

The History Of the Masters Golf Tournament - A Legacy

The first US Masters event or the first Augusta National Invitation tournament was held in a 365-acre golf course situated in Augusta, Georgia. It originally used to be a farmland full of flowers and trees until it was taken over by the co-founder, Bobby Jones in the year 1931. Bobby Jones added great value to the beauty of the course and since its founding, Augusta golf course remains the envy of golf courses all over the world. The event is normally held in the first week of April every year. The history of Masters Golf tournament has witnessed 72 such consecutive events taking place, except for the 3 years when America was mired in World war II.

In its entire history, the Masters event at the Augusta national golf course is known for its conservative nature in regard to spectators. The founders of the tournament believed that the access to the golf course should be kept limited only to the playing golfers and their caddies. Even though these rules were relaxed with the passage of time, there is still a code of conduct in place for the spectators, who are often known as patrons here. Owing to the strict etiquette norms both for the players and the audience, US Masters is known to be a quite privileged golf event. Not only it is extremely difficult for a professional golfer to put up a good show and win the tournament here, it is an extremely challenging task even for the patrons to be in attendance. Even the practice round tickets are booked in advance for years and years and one needs to keep waiting in the waiting list before getting a chance to witness the spectacle that the US Masters offers.

AUGUSTA GA

The History of the Masters Golf Tournament has an interesting lineage of traditions that are observed till date. It is these traditions that make competing at the Augusta even more special and memorable. One such tradition that is observed till date is the presentation of Green Jacket to the winner of the tournament. The winners are adorned in a shamrock green jacket, a symbol of membership at the Augusta National Golf Club. They are allowed to keep the jacket with themselves for around an year, after which it should be returned back to the management. They can also wear this green jacket while on the golf course. One such infamous incident associated with this green jacket is the Gary Player episode. He never returned his first green jacket after winning it in the year 1961. He subsequently won the tournament in the years 1974 and 1978 as well. Other renowned winners of the coveted title at the US Masters are the six time victorious, Jack Nicklaus, the four time champion, Arnold Palmer and of course Tiger Woods who became the youngest winner of US Masters at the age of 21.

Ben Bernanke - Replacing Alan Greenspan

The reputation of Alan Greenspan as the Chairman of the Federal Reserve was one of brilliance or incredible luck. Now it is the turn of Ben Bernanke.

Ben Bernanke

AUGUSTA GA

Alan Greenspan reigned as Fed Chairman for nearly 20 years. During this time, the economy in the United States performed at fairly stable and consistent levels. Yes, there were recessions and stock market crashes, but these were minor hiccups in an otherwise solid economic run.

Ben Bernanke has taken over control of the fed from Alan Greenspan. Instead of enjoying a peaceful grace period, he walks into a situation where an extremely hot housing market threatens to collapse. How will he handle the situation? Perhaps a review of Ben Bernanke will give us an idea.

Mr. Bernanke was born in 1953 in Augusta, Georgia. His intellectual abilities were apparent throughout his youth, particularly when he received a near perfect 1590 out of 1600 on the SAT. He graduated summa cum laude from Harvard in 1975. He then obtained a Ph.D from MIT in 1979. He subsequently taught at Stanford and then Princeton. He resigned from Princeton in July of 2005 when it became apparent he would be the new Chairman of the Federal Reserve. In short, we are talking about a very intelligent individual unlike many of the political friends President Bush has appointed to various positions in the government.

Intellectually, Bernanke is considered a macroeconomist, which mean he looks at overall trends in the economy related to production, employment levels, income being earned and price trends. He also is noted for studying the Great Depression and how the devaluation of money during that period impacted the economy. For those that fear a housing market crash, this would appear to be good news.

Bernanke is hardly a new face at the Federal Reserve. He has served on the Board of Governors for the Federal Reserve since 2002. Essentially, he was an internal promotion in an effort to continue the current fiscal policy of the Federal Reserve.

Given Bernanke's background, can we make any educated guesses as to how he will guide the Federal Reserve? Generally, he appears to be very conscious of deflation factors, which means he should have some fairly detailed thoughts on the housing market and how to keep a slowdown from becoming a bigger problem. Bernanke also revealed he will speak in plain language, unlike Greenspan, and doesn't appear interested in commenting on budgets and social issues. Greenspan was infamous for dropping comments regarding tax cuts.

Is Ben Bernanke up to the task of being the Chairman of the Federal Reserve? We are certainly going to find out.

Tax Deductions (Business Tax Deduction Tips)

Real estate depreciation offers substantial opportunity for increasing tax deductions. Most depreciation schedules are established by simply separating land and long-life improvements. This simple approach is lawful but sharply understates lawful depreciation. About 20-40% of improvements for most properties are short-life items. Short life items can be depreciated over 5, 7, or 15 years. There are about 130 short-life items that have been determined by legislation, tax court decisions and IRS rulings.

Real estate depreciation can typically be increased by 50-100% for the first 5-7 years of ownership by obtaining a cost segregation study. A cost segregation study precisely values up to 130 components of real estate that can be valued as short-life property.

AUGUSTA GA

By obtaining a cost segregation study, it is possible to obtain a windfall of tax deductions by "catching-up" previously under-reported depreciation. This one-time "catch-up" can occur in the first tax return filed after the cost segregation study is performed without filing any amended tax returns.

Reviewing fixed asset listings (of business personal property) can generate a meaningful amount of tax deductions. They often include items that should have been expensed, which have been sold or thrown away or which have an excessive depreciation life. Items that should have been expensed include operating expenses (sometimes included by error) and maintenance or repairs (which was necessary but did not increase the life of the assets or component.) Section 179 allows business to use up to 8,000 of 2006 capital expenditures as tax deductions. Confirm you are not capitalizing assets that could be claimed as a tax deduction.

Casualty losses also offer opportunity for tax deductions. For a casualty loss, you can deduct: 1) the market value immediately before the casualty less 2) the market value immediately after the casualty less the amount covered by insurance. The portion that is not intuitive is: the market value after the casualty is much less than the value before plus the cost to renovate. Other factors which can and should be considered for tax deductions are: lost rent/usage, stigma (in some cases), construction management, construction risks, and entrepreneurial effort.

Bad debts are a subjective matter. Judgment is required to accurately estimate the amount that should be claimed as a tax deduction. If bad debts have not been examined carefully for several years, they may offer a meaningful tax deduction opportunity. (This applies to companies who utilize accrual accounting. Companies who use cash accounting can't claim a tax deduction for bad debt since they never recognized the revenue.)

Do well by doing good. You reduce taxes in several ways when making charitable contributions. For example, you purchased land 10 years ago for 0,000, and it is now worth ,000,000. However, you now realize you will never use the land for the intended purpose. You can donate the land to a qualified charitable organization and take a tax deduction for ,000,000. However, you do not have to pay capital gains taxes on the appreciation.

Tax deductions sometimes seem arcane and complicated. However, a knowledgeable team of advisors from several fields can reduce your federal income taxes. The complexity of the tax code makes it difficult for any one personal to be knowledgeable in all areas.

Cost segregation produces tax deductions and reduces federal income taxes across the country and in every size market. Below are just a few examples of cities where cost segregation generates meaningful tax deductions.

City:

New York, NY Houston, TX Hartford, CT Las Vegas, NV Memphis, TN Philadelphia, PA Orlando, FL Phoenix, AZ Atlanta, GA Bridgeport, CT Worcester, MA Akron, OH Harrisburg, PA Salt Lake City, UT St. Louis, MO Portland, OR Scranton, PA Greenville, SC Bakersfield, CA Madison, WI Chicago, IL Fresno, CA Riverside, CA Albany, NY Indianapolis, IN Birmingham, AL Ft. Lauderdale, FL Baton Rouge, LA Augusta, GA Honolulu, HI Cost segregation produces tax deductions for virtually all property types, including the following:

Property Type:

Medical facility Shopping mall Restaurant Country club Fast food restaurant Power center Hotel Car wash facility Convenience store Health spa Almost every industry, including the following, can generate cost-efficient tax deductions by using cost segregation.

Industry:

Golf courses and country clubs Transportation equipment manufacturing Electrical component manufacturing Real estate lesser Apparel manufacturing Wood product manufacturing Plastic and rubber products manufacturing Furniture stores Beverage and tobacco product manufacturing Building supply dealers

Nook Review - Barnes and Noble Nook Ups the Cool Factor

Launched in October of 2009, the Barnes and Noble Nook was seen as a possible candidate to unseat the Amazon Kindle from its dominance in the ereader industry. What has it got that makes it a serious challenger? This Nook review explores the many features of this ebook reader.

barnes and noble nook color

Size and Display

BARNES AND NOBLE

First off, the basic specs. The Nook's surface dimensions are fairly standard. It is 7.7 inches in length, 4.9 inches in width, 0.5-inch thick, and weighs 11.2 ounces. It is roughly about the same size as the 2nd generation Kindle - only thicker and a bit heavier. The device also comes with a 6-inch e-ink display with 16 shades of gray, and a number of choices for font type and size.

But perhaps what gives it a wow factor that's not found on most ebook readers today is its 3.5-inch capacitive color touchscreen. Located just below the e-ink display, the LCD screen replaces the standard keyboard and buttons, used for making ebook selections and navigating within the ereader and the text itself.

Other Value-Added Features

The Nook is equipped with 2GB of internal storage and a micro-SD expansion slot so it's easy to add more memory as the need arises. It also comes with a replaceable lithium ion battery, 3G connection through the AT&T network, WiFi connectivity, MP3 player, speakers, and built-in dictionary.

Other Nook features completely unique from other ebook readers are the book lending and store browsing capabilities. As the name implies, book lending refers to being able to lend out an ebook in your library to another ereader user for a 14-day period. In-store browsing, on the other hand, means having the option to browse full ebooks at no cost in brick-and-mortar Barnes & Noble outlets.

Some Issues

This Nook review won't be complete if we don't mention some of the concerns expressed by current Nook owners. One is the device's lack of web browsing feature despite its WiFi connectivity. Another serious concern is the Nook's short battery life. Barnes & Noble says it could last about 7 to 10 days with the WiFi deactivated, but for actual users, 4 to 5 days is more like it.

With the Nook's advanced features and Barnes & Noble's innovative services, the Nook could have a big impact on the ebook reader market. But as this Nook review points out, there are still a number of improvements that have to be made, for the device to really take off in a big way.

House Approves Increase in FHA Limits

The House of Representatives approved a bill to increase the FHA's lending limits and reduce payment restrictions. The bill, which will help low-income and first-time home buyers, was sponsored by Ohio Representative Bob Ney. It received almost unanimous support by the house with a 415-7 vote.

The factors in determining the maximum amount insurable by the FHA for single-family homes will be changed as an amendment to the National Housing Act, according to the new law. The bill allows the FHA flexibility in insuring mortgages up to the median home price in areas where home prices are extremely high. It will also provide for a maximum of 40-year mortgage terms.

AUGUSTA GA

The bill will eliminate all flat mortgage insurance premiums, instead instating a tiered premium system according to the property's loan-to-value ration, the borrower's credit history and debt-to-income ration and the FHA's experience with comparable borrowers. The current minimum down payment of 3% will be discarded. The limit on federally insured reverse mortgages will also be eliminated

The law will allow loans to be more easily made in high-cost areas. For years, low-income buyers have been pressured to take out high-cost private mortgages due to the substantial increases in house prices in metro areas. The FHA hopes that the new law will change this trend.

"Modernizing FHA will improve competition in the prime home loan mortgage industry and effectively assist the industry in combating abusive and discriminatory lending practices," said Ney.

"This bill helps further increase the country's home ownership rate, especially among low and moderate-income and minority families."

The Physically Challenged in the Nigerian Entertainment Industry

Late Ray Charles had lost his sight at the age of seven and his younger brother, two years earlier. The world he was once saw and basked in its beauty and serenity had become dark and misty. In the face of hardship and seemingly insurmountable mountains as he travelled wearily on life's path, he found solace in music which turned out to be an escape route that late Ray Charles walked upon triumphantly into stardom. Such was the life of this great artiste(though blind), who played the piano with dexterity that "RAY" a biopic movie was released in 2004 starring Jamie Foxx and directed by Taylor Hackford. Our parents would certainly have a nostalgic feeling, reliving hit songs such as "I got a woman", "Georgia", "Hit the Road Jack", amongst others and with a dozen Grammy awards and others coupled with ground breaking achievements recorded in his profile, Ray Charles who passed on to glory on June 10, 2004 was truly a legend.

"This track is so delicious, I go by the way of Cobilicious" was the intro of the rap lyrics Cobhams Asuquo reeled out in Dekunle Fuji's successful track "No Lele", though many Nigerians were unaware of his 'nil vision state'. His popularity soared amongst the populace when he performed the beautiful thought provoking chorus in the song "Lagi Mo" (The Roof Top MCs) which saw the song hitting the number one spot on some Nigerian chart shows. He won the HIP Hop world Awards 2007 for the "producer of the year category", increasing the number of statuettes he'd already received. He is presently one of the highly sought after producers in the music industry, making guest appearances on TV programmes and reality show (Project Fame West Africa, season 1) along with the solicitation for his services which extends to Corporate bodies, banks (Sky bank's advert with the Akuna matata song)

AUGUSTA GA

The icy hands of death almost took away Yinka Ayefele in 1999 when he was involved in an auto crash. The crash affected his spinal chord and sentenced him to life on a wheel chair. Through the fiery trials and the stop of the pity partying, he was bold enough to put the ordeal behind him, and bursting forth like water from a rock to quench our thirst with refreshing exciting gospel flavour. Fame, fortune, local and international awards have willingly found their way into his life.

The Nigerian music terrain can boast of this duo who have succeeded on its stage, but can the same be said of the movie industry. We've seen physically challenged roles (visually impaired/ lame) being performed by able bodied thespians to the best of their abilities, but wouldn't it be a surprise to millions of movie viewers for medically proven, physically challenged people to naturally perform such roles assigned to their able bodied counterparts. Who says there are no talented ones among them whose acting skills can't be brushed up, after all not every A-list thespian studied theatre arts or attended schools that specialized in harnessing such talents.

There are a lot of talented physically challenged people out there rotting away simply because no one has dared to give them a chance. After all the scripts can be converted into Braille letters for them to read, at least we know their sense of hearing is hyper functional than that of the sight seeing fellow. Quite a number of TV Reality shows have hit the screens these past couple of years (dominantly in the Entertainment sector) with new ones emerging by the day, such as Gulder Ultimate search, AMBO, Next movie star, The Intern, Maltina Family dance all, Star Quest, Football with Fash, The Twelve Ambassadors, Big Brother Nigeria, Apprentice Africa, Idols West Africa, Nokia First Chance, Project Fame West Africa.

No reality TV show has been made for the physically challenged probably borne out of fear of not securing sponsors (who are focused on making returns for their investments), or fear of outright rejection by the teeming viewers. Who says a reality show that the physically challenged can function in can't be conceived and birthed, its all about ingenuity and who can tell whether such a reality show can end up being the best among the lot, nothing is impossible!

No one chooses to be born with a disability, a microscopic percentage makes a touch down on plant earth with disabilities, while a dominant proportion can be attributed to 'the carelessness of man, accidents and in some cases 'African remote controlled incidents. Stevie wonder and late Ray Charles were given opportunities to clinch the tickets to stardom, which they appreciatively did, simply because someone believed in them and created opportunities for them to show the world what they had. Let's help the physically challenged live their dreams in Nigeria, for there is without an iota of doubt, ability in disability!.

History Of Grapevines

The first documentation of grapevines growing in the Americas was discovered in researching the logbook of navigator Giovanni de Verazzano, who reported in 1504 that a large "white grape" was vigorously growing at Cape Fear, North Carolina. The English explorer of the New World, Sir Walter Raleigh, confirmed in a letter to Arthur Barlowe in 1585, the discovery of a white grape (scuppernong), when he landed in coastal North Carolina.

The 1500's ancient discovery of native grapevines growing in America was followed by numerous Spanish settlements along the coast of the United States where introduced old world grapevines were planted alongside the native American grapevines. That interplanting resulted in natural crosses of hybrid grapevines, a blending of the characteristics of both types. The French navigators were also exploring territories and lands surrounding Louisiana and were planting European grape vine varieties from the South of France, that also hybridized with native American grapevines. The English settlers established colonies in 1733 in Savannah, Georgia and Fort Frederica, on Saint Simon's Island, Georgia, under General James Oglethorpe, who was the first Governor of Georgia. These English colonies brought in seeds of grapes from Europe that were planted and grown in small farm vineyards. Those transplants intermixed with native grapevines that grew in woods nearby, and this intermixing resulted in new grape hybrids that were spread by the Indians and colonists everywhere. It is believed that these hybrids produced some selections such as Concord, Niagara, Catawba, and others that were identified as growing naturally in the woods by the great American explorer William Bartram, in his book, Travels, as Vitis labrusca by botanists today.

AUGUSTA GA

Henry Laurens, who served as President of the American Continental Congress after the year 1755, lived near Charleston, South Carolina, and introduced olive trees, lime trees, everbearing strawberries, ginger, red raspberry, and blue grapes into the colonies to be grown for food. Henry Laurens was a good friend of John and William Bartram, the famous father and son, botanist explorers, and author of the book, Travels, in 1773. From Southern France, Henry Laurens introduced "apples, pears, plums, the white chasselas grape (vine) which bore abundantly." Laurens claimed that he raised the fruit of the olive tree that he pickled and explained was "equal to those exported."

William Bartram wrote in his botanical book, Travels, in 1773, that he left Augusta on the way to Savannah, Georgia, and viewed a plantation growing grapes. "Vitis vinifera, for wine, Vitis corinthiaca, for Currants, Vitis allobrogia, for Raisins, olives, figs, Morus (mulberry), for feeding silkworms, Citrus aurantium, Citrus limon, Citrus verrucosa, the great sweet scented Citron."

When crossing the Saint John's River in Eastern Florida, Bartram wrote that the "grape vines in this place were astonishing to behold." He wrote that the grape was "small and ill tasted" but the strength and bulk of the vines could be imagined to pull the giant mighty trees down to Earth, but actually served to uphold the trees since the 12 inch wide vines twined up the trees and then "spread along their limbs, from tree to tree, throughout the forest." In Alabama, Bartram wrote that the trees "were entangled with grape vines (Vitis campestris) of a particular species; the bunches (racemes) of fruit were very large, as were the grapes that composed them, though yet green and not fully grown, but when ripe they were of various colors, and their juice sweet and rich." Bartram wrote that the Indians gathered, dried, and stored them (raisins) as provisions.

Bartram identified on page 327 of Travels, the European grape, Vitis vinifera,

"Which ramble and spread themselves over the shrubs and low trees in these situations" and the Indians assured Bartram that the grapes would "produce fruit affording on excellent juice; the grapes are of various colours when ripe, of the figure and about the size of the European wine grapes".

This grape that Bartram identified as European grape, Vitis vinifera, could very well have been a hybrid cross with an American native grapevine.

Because of the introduction of the European grapevines into America in the 1500's, there was ample time for intermixing of species, so that taxonomists today have great difficulty of positively identifying a grapevine growing in the woods as a true native. There is a high probability that wild grapevines contain genetic components of European inheritance

Prince Nursery of Flushing, N.Y. Was established as the first American Nursery in 1737 and Robert Prince advertised "Lisbon and Madeira grapevines for sale, Vitis vinifera." It was interesting to note reports that Prince was unsuccessful in attempts to grow vines of wine grapes (European) due to "his inability to control a deadly fungus." It is probably that Prince thought the problem was a fungus, but most likely the problem was a pest, phylloxera, that was a small lice-like creature that ate the roots of European grapevines, Vitis vinifera, and once American grapevines were exported to Europe, most of the vineyards growing there were destroyed.

George Washington built Mount Vernon as his home in Virginia in 1754, where he planted extensive orchards and vineyards from which he picked grapes and dried them into raisins. They were a "Staple at the dinner table" of George Washington.

Thomas Jefferson planted extensive European grapevines at his vineyard at Monticello, Va., in 1807, but like many other gardeners and wine makers, he failed when all the vines died of phylloxera, but he replaced those vines with the native American alternative grapevine, scuppernong, Vitis rotundifolia.

Perhaps no other group of plants is known better than the plant tribe of grapes. The grape is known more for its ability to transform into wine, than for its desirability as a table grape or a desert grape. Some grapes contain so much sugar inside the skin, that they will not ferment in on the vine after ripening, but will turn into a raisin. The unique aesthetic quality of the grape is the capacity for producing juice. The juice may be used fresh or fermented into famous vines with distinctive aromas and flavors increasing into quality with aging, some lasting for centuries. The Roman wine makers put floating olive oil in the wine bottles to prevent the wine from oxidizing and fermenting further into vinegar.

Luther Burbank, the great American hybridizer in his 8 volumes of Fruit Improvement, made grape selections by hybridizing over 100,000 species of American grapes with European grapes and other species that he imported from various countries. Burbank's inventive work on grapevines demonstrated that the characteristics of grape production, taste, and many other factors can show great variations, depending on climate, conditions, and soil changes. He imported muscadine vines, Vitis rotundifolia, from the Southeastern United States where they flourished, but these grapevines were not satisfactory growers when planted in California.

Burbank spent considerable effort in hybridizing American grape species with Tokay grapes from Hungary and the ancient Syrian grapevines of the Bible. Burbank also imported the Thompson's white seedless grapevines in 1880 into California to hybridize with American grapevine species. He found it was an extremely productive, light-colored, strong-growing, yellowish white grape "that grew well in California vineyards."

It is obvious that historically grapes were found growing in America by European explorers, who brought European grapevines and grape seeds with them, that were considered to be superior to American native grapevines. European grapevines had been interbred for centuries with certain genetic weaknesses appearing, when American native grapevines were introduced into Europe, and the European vines faced total extinction until it was learned that the European vines could be saved by being grafted on top of American grapevine root stocks. The genetic characteristics of European grapevines were hybridized naturally when planted along side American native grapevines into new commercial grape selections. American plant breeders have achieved monumental successes in producing new grapes that are specifically used as juice grapes, raisin grapes, wine grapes, table grapes, and pick-your-own selections.

The Civil War in Georgia

Abraham Lincoln's election in November 1860 led to the calamitous conflict known as the Civil War. Following other Southern states, delegates to Georgia's convention to consider secession convened in its capital city of Milledgeville in January 1861. After spirited debate, delegates voted 208 to 89 to leave the Union.

Far from the war's early fighting, and being one of the new Confederacy's largest states, Georgia's primary initial war contributions were its men and materials. Some 130,000 Georgians served in the Confederate military, while manufacturing facilities were quickly constructed or expanded in several cities with rail service, including Atlanta, Augusta, Columbus, Macon and Rome. The state's relatively remote location from the conflict was ideal.

AUGUSTA GA

The war reached Georgia in April 1862, with the Federal capture of Fort Pulaski near its largest city and seaport, Savannah. Fort Pulaski's surrender, caused by rifled artillery bombardment, ended the era of masonry coastal defenses.

The following day one of the war's most storied episodes occurred through northwest Georgia. After stealing the locomotive "General" in Big Shanty (Kennesaw), the Great Locomotive Chase (a.k.a. Andrew's Raid) covered ninety miles northward past Ringgold. Its legend prompted two future Hollywood films and a U.S. Supreme Court decision (over ownership of the General). Many of the raiders became the first recipients of the Medal of Honor. The raid itself failed, with several raiders hanged as spies.

September 1863 witnessed the first major fighting in Georgia, culminating in the horrific Battle of Chickamauga. Yet 1864 was the war's decisive year. In May a new Federal commander, William T. Sherman, began a four-month campaign to capture Atlanta. Outnumbered Confederates under Joseph E. Johnston and John Bell Hood vainly attempted to halt Sherman's advance. Atlanta's fall assured President Lincoln's re-election and ultimate Union victory.

As the war dragged on, the number of prisoners mounted. Andersonville in southwest Georgia was selected for a new stockade. Dwindling Confederate resources and overcrowding quickly became acute problems. Nearly 13,000 Federal prisoners died from malnutrition and disease. Today Andersonville honors all American prisoners-of-wars from every American conflict.

The war came to a devastating end in Georgia with Sherman's March to the Sea in late 1864, and Wilson's Raid in April 1865. Leaving a burning Atlanta in mid-November Sherman's army swept across Georgia, destroying everything of possible use to the Confederacy. The indiscriminate Federal foraging resulted in their hatred by many Georgians for generations. Sherman's march ended in mid-December with Savannah's capture.

The following April the war's largest cavalry campaign swept into Georgia at Columbus and elsewhere, then quickly captured Macon, again laying waste to Georgia's war-making capacity in its wake. The next month elements of James Wilson's cavalry captured President Jefferson Davis near Irwinville, officially bringing an end to the Confederacy.

What began in 1861 with excitement and hope ended in 1865 with 11,000+ Georgians killed, many thousands more wounded, and economic devastation. Yet nearly 500,000 African-American slaves in Georgia were emancipated, beginning their long road to full civil rights. The Civil War was Georgia's most momentous chapter.

Important Professional Golf Tournaments

There are four major tournaments in Professional Golf: the Masters, the U.S. Open, the Open Championship and the PGA Championship.

These four most important golf championship games kick off with the Masters in April and go until the end of August. Winning all four is a nearly impossible feat; the "grand slam" has only happened once in the history of golf, won by Bobby Jones in 1930. (Though this is on a technicality, as the Master's did not yet exist. The closest a golfer has come to the grand slam as it is defined today is Tiger Woods, who won the 4 consecutively, but over 2 years.)

AUGUSTA GA

The elusive grand slam, therefore, is more of a myth than a reality; Roger Federer has 16 Grand Slam titles for men's tennis. But that does not change the level of importance that these 4 series hold.

The Masters Tournament kicks off the golf season, held in the first full week of April each year. (Women are not able to compete as the Augusta National Golf Club is a private men's only course.) The Masters is the only championship with a stagnant location. Bobby Jones, previously mentioned as the only slam winner, created the Masters when he designed and opened the Augusta, GA course in 1963.

The US Open is scheduled in June, so that the final Sunday of game play is on Father's Day. The Open is played at a variety of courses, with difficult scoring a goal to increase driving precision. The leaders are often close to par as the greens are chosen particularly for their severity (to be in the running for host, many clubs undergo renovations to make their courses more difficult).

The Open Championship, or British Open, is held on one of 9 historic courses in England and Scotland. It's the oldest of the four and the only grand slam championship on foreign soil. The British Open is held the weekend of the third Friday in July.

The PGA Championship, part of the PGA Tour, is held annually 4 weeks after the British Open. As it is the last of the majors, the PGA holds great importance: players who do well in the PGA are automatically invited to the other three the following year.

Does Freedom of Speech Apply to Military Members?

It Is a Good Idea to Watch What You Say In the Military

Any officer of the Military does not want to be bad mouthing any official in the government, basically from the President on down. If he/she does, they could find themselves before their peers in a court martial.

AUGUSTA GA

The law pertaining to this is found under Article 88. It is fairly complex and detailed but the basics of it are as follows:

The official being spoken against must officially be in one of the following capacities: President Vice President Congress Secretary of Defense Secretary of a Military Department Secretary of Transportation Governor in the following capacities: legislature, State, Territory, CommonwealthIt doesn't matter whether the derogatory words were spoken in an official or private capacity.

This law is not generally enforced if the adverse remarks are made in a general political discussion, provided that they were not made as a personal remark towards one of the parties covered in this article. The same is applicable to private conversation.

Many times individuals read small writings such as this on the different laws of the military and just assume that the majority of them are mundane and not routinely put into practice. This is not something one wants to take for granted. If the law is on the books, it can be used at any time. Article 88 has only been around for about 60 years, but it really goes back many more years than that.

This particular military law may be one of the lesser ones known to many but nevertheless there have been charges laid in the past pertaining to it. Several officers have received disciplinary action for adversely voicing their opinion about a President, for example. Although Article 88 is not the only one that pertains to conduct of speech, it is one that any officer or officer-hopeful should be mindful of. Officers in civilian clothes or officers off duty have been reported for bad mouthing the applicable officials.

Has Barnes and Noble crossed the line? Or, maybe they just moved the line. The brick and mortar book selling behemoth first took on the online book selling Goliath, Amazon, with a head to head clash in the e-commerce book selling platform. Then, when Amazon struck an epic blow in an attempt to control the e-book platform with its proprietary Kindle, B&N struck back with the Nook. Now, it appears to have launched an attack at the Apple I Pad with the new NOOK Color.

barnesandnoble.com

The new Color Nook is by far no means a match for the i Pad, but it could pass for one mortar round lobbed in its direction. Visually it resembles an iPad with its simply smooth exterior and 7" touch screen, but a deeper look inside shows us it still remains a high end e-book reader.

BARNES AND NOBLE

The NOOK Color does have Wi-Fi networking capability with web surfing functionality, but, in the first generation does not have the 3G wireless capability that other e readers have. I will assume that future generations will have this capability. One nice feature built into the Nook is the ability to share what you are reading with friends on Twitter and Facebook. Many websites now have seamless integration between those social platforms. I glad to see it built into the Nook.

Memory has expanded from its predecessors to 8 GB on board with the usual upgrade in volume using a 32GB mini SD chip. There should be enough memory present to keep even the most voracious reader busy for quite a while. With Nooks Lifetime Library feature, you should never have to worry about the lost investment in your electronic library.

Spice up your new NOOK Color with down loadable apps to increase the total functionality of your machine. Play games, upload and view your Microsoft Office documents, change your desk top image, and even share books amongst friends in your social media network. The sharing is limited though; still not as open as the old tree cut version. It does have audio play back from MP3 format; nothing new there.

It does, though, have the capability to play videos in MP4 format and listen to Pandora internet radio. Just make sure you're in a Wi-Fi hot spot; Remember, no 3G. The lines between e book reader and the PC continue to blur.

The new NOOK Color definitely reaches out further than any other reader before. As the i Pad reaches from the other direction will we see a clash for supremacy or some unifying ground where all computing is mobile and all computers can be toted by one hand. I personally believe it will be a long continuous battle with no certain clear winner. There will not be the decisive war like VHS vs. Beta, but more like the war between Apple vs. PC. The front keeps moving back and forth with no clear end in the foreseeable future.

What's the Best Ebook Reader? The Nook Vs Kindle For 2010

It was a battle of the ebook readers for the holiday season in 2009, the Nook and Kindle 2 being two of the most popular models available. It makes sense to check in on how they are stacking up against each other now that the Nook has been out for a few months and has received some customer feedback.

barnes and noble locations

The Nook Early Struggles:

BARNES AND NOBLE

Not In Stock? When the Nook was released in November, the public seemed to embrace the new ebook reader, and immediately sold out Barnes and Noble's entire stock. Few actually got the Nook before the holidays. Most had to wait until January or February to get their devices. It seemed Barnes and Noble played a little on the safe side.

Dual Screen Navigation Issues? Immediately after release, it became apparent for some that there were issues with the Dual Screens. Firstly, many found the navigation confusing with the small color screen and upper reading screen. There seemed to be too many ways to navigate to certain content for some critics.

Time learning the device helps navigation, but it couldn't help that the upper screen would "time out" while the lower screen was "thinking", making you restart from the beginning of what you wanted to do.

Nook Vs. Kindle for 2010:

Barnes and Noble has since updated the device to fix known issues. The product is in stock for quick delivery and many people seem to like the product.

The Kindle 2 and Nook are very similar devices in many respects.

Same in price. Same reading screens (E-Ink Technology) Same default memory (2 GB) Similar Size Similar Weight (Kindle is slightly lighter)

The Nook Differences...

Allows Lending capability- You can lend out your books to other Nook owners (or app owners) for up to 2 weeks. You can't use the ebook in that time that you are lending it. Uses Android software- Allowing the use of Applications on the Nook. Access to more public domain books for free. Color navigation touch screen- You can scroll through book covers in color. This has been reported as slowing the ebook reader compared to the Kindle 2.

The Kindle 2 Differences...

International Wireless Usage- You can use the ebook reader in over 100 countries at the moment. Text-to-Speech- This is a feature that has a voice read the book to you. Push Button Navigation of Content. The Kindle is slightly lighter at 10.2 ounces vs 12.1 ounces for the Nook.

You can see that the two devices are very similar except for a few key features. The Nook has the color-touch screen, whereas the Kindle 2 is push-button technology, and the Nook does not offer International coverage unlike the Kindle 2.

How to Publish Your Novel As an Ebook - An Author's Guide

When I published my first ebook at the start of this year I knew enough about writing but didn't know quite where to start the transformation from Word manuscript to finished ebook. The final presentation had to be 100% professional but I didn't want to spend money on additional software. I made many mistakes and wasted a lot of time but eventually succeeded in self-publishing an ebook - now selling on Amazon Digital, Apple iBooks, Barnes & Noble, Smashwords and more plus a cheap website I set up for less than including domain name for a year. The site has an instant, downloadable shop and you can set the whole thing up with a couple of clicks (check out MR SITE, which sells in both UK and USA). It was a steep learning curve.

barnes and noble nook ereader

These were some of my main questions and how I got round them:

BARNES AND NOBLE

Q: WHAT SOFTWARE DO YOU NEED TO MAKE THE ACTUAL BOOK?

A: Professional designers use Adobe InDesign which retails at around 00. You don't need that. You don't need Adobe Pro either. All you need is the free version of Adobe PDF. If you're publishing straight to the ebookstores like Amazon Digital, Barnes & Noble, Apple iBooks etc you don't need a PDF, after formatting to their guidelines you just transfer Word or HTML straight through. Lulu takes PDF.

Q: HOW DO YOU MAKE AN EBOOK COVER?

A: One of the most taxing problems I had. I didn't want one of those 3D things, all I wanted was a flat image with big writing on the top, like the book covers you see on Amazon and all the booksellers' sites. After Googling and downloading lots of useless free software (nothing more than 3D boxes most of them) I found the best way was to make a cover image on Word (I used one of my photographs) and use Word Art graphics to make the titles. It took a while to work out how to get the letters over the picture:

Once you've clicked Word Art and got the box up on your screen, click the 2nd window in on the 'Edit' box (Format Word Art). The window looks like a rectangle with 3 colours next to a square.

Then a new box will appear.

Click Layout and a series of window images will appear with a dog image and lines.

Select 'Wrapping Style, In front of Text', the dog on the far right.

Remember what you have is a 'document' not a 'picture'. To turn it into an image that is recognised as an image which can be downloaded onto websites, Amazon Digital etc, take a screenshot:

Press COMMAND + SHIFT + 4 all at the same time. Your cursor turns into a cross. Place that at top left corner of your image and drag it to bottom right. Release the buttons. You'll now find an image file on your desktop. Before you can upload it anywhere it needs to be labelled with a dot and the letters.jpg like that. To relabel click on the description box until it goes blank & type in a title eg budgie.jpg.)

Q: HOW DO YOU INSERT PHOTOS?

Click Insert > Picture > From File

make sure it's labelled with a.jpg.

Use only LOW QUALITY photos. When transferring your document to PDF make sure you check the 72DPI box or your ebook will take a long time to download and clog up people's IN boxes.

Q: MY OLD VERSION OF WORD DOESN'T HAVE A FACILITY TO TURN MY TEXT INTO ADOBE PDF?

Download Open Office (free). Making covers on Open Office is a little trickier as it's more advanced technically than Word. I found it easier to make my covers on Word and transfer them to Open Office.

Q: WHAT ABOUT ISBNS? YOU HAVE TO BUY IN BULK, THAT'S EXPENSIVE!

Every print book that's sold in a shop and/or stored in a public library has to have an ISBN number and bar code. ISBN stands for the International Standard Book Number. The ISBN registration agency run by Nielsen reaches out to over 100 countries around the world. You can purchase your own ISBN if you want to give your book an identity but you have to buy them in batches of 10 which costs £111.86/3.00. The good news is ebooks don't need them. There are advantages, but you don't have to have one.

Q: HOW DO I BEGIN TO UNDERSTAND ALL THE DIFFERENT FORMATS - EPUB ETC?.

You don't need to. Upload your work to Mark Coker's excellent Smashwords and, as long as you've followed all the layout guidelines in the (free) Smashwords Style Guide your ebook will gain Premium Status. They'll then ship it (free) to many different outlets including Barnes & Noble, US iBooks, Kindle etc.

Q: I'M A UK AUTHOR BUT ALL THESE SITES ARE AMERICAN

UK authors can sell on the sites mentioned above. Worth doing as ebooks haven't taken off in the UK yet. The new Amazon Kindle 70% royalty however is only for US authors, authors outside the USA are still on 35%. Smashwords pays you via PayPal, Amazon sends cheques in the post. At Smashwords there are tax issues for non-US sellers which can be avoided, all is explained on the Smashwords website. Conversely, Lulu is UK based but takes authors from everywhere.

Computer Cookies: Are They Good or Bad?

Explaining "Cookies" (the non caloric ones that reside in your computer!)

barnes and noble book store

You can't talk about all those nasty 'things' that can 'attack' your computer while you are surfing the Internet, like viruses or spyware, without talking about 'Cookies'. But what are they and are they really bad for my computer?

BARNES AND NOBLE

Ok, first let's define the term, and then we'll explain the good and the bad about it.

Cookie(s):

A small data (text and numbers) file (piece of information) created by a Web server (large computer that stores web sites) that is stored on your computer either temporarily for that session only (the time that you spend on a web site) or permanently on the hard disk (persistent cookie). Cookies provide a way for the Web site that you visit and go back to visit again, to identify users and keep track of their preferences. Amazon and Barnes and Noble online are very creative in the use of their cookies that get generated when you visit.

Here's an example from my computer from visiting the Disney.com website:

CP null*disneyworld.disney.go.com/1088 1761935360 30785590 403215680 29726670*

Notice that the only thing in that string of text and numbers that you can recognize is the name of the website. The rest of the information is simply a set of numbers that only a computer can understand.

Why are cookies important to you? Well, you would not be able to browse through the Web as you are currently used to if you had cookies restricted on your computer.

The Good "Cookies" (non calorie type)

Cookies are commonly used to "maintain the state" (the current or last-known status) of the session (time that you spend on a site) as a user browses around on the site. For example, if you filled out a form and decided to leave that for a moment to view another page, when you come back to that form, the information that you already filled in would still be there. Without cookies, the site would not know who you were.

On the 2 web sites that I mentioned, Amazon and Barnes and Noble, they both use a combination of cookies and online database to recognize you when you return to the site as well as "remember" your earlier choices and from those choices recommend possible book or music choices for you on your current visit.

Imagine, if you will, walking into a local Barnes and Noble store where a clerk immediately recognizes you, walks up to you as she calls you by name and walks you over to your own table of books and music. You see that they have put all of your favorite kinds of books and musicians on the table, both new and old works, all laid out for your quick viewing pleasure!

And, on the next table, is a sign saying "Other people who bought these items also purchased these items" so that you may find interesting items that you may never have seen but might find interesting. Wouldn't that make shopping a great experience?

Well, that is exactly what it is like to shop online with a sophisticated shopping web site like Barnes and Noble and Amazon! And it's only because of cookies remembering who you are that allows this type of service to occur.

The Bad Side of Cookies

Actually, as you have just seen, cookies on your computer are not a bad thing; it's just that the information that they contain can be quite enticing to unscrupulous people. Quite a bit of personal data may reside in the cookie files in your computer, such as ID and Password information. As a result, this storehouse of private information is sometimes the object of attack, which is what happens with some types of spyware.

The default (Default refers to a value automatically assigned to a computer program or device), settings in your Web browser typically allow "first-party" cookies that do not contain any personal information, but not "third-party" cookies.

First-party cookies are ones that are created by the Web site you are visiting. Third-party cookies are created by a Web site other than the one you are currently visiting; for example, by a third-party advertiser on that site (pop-up or banner). The purpose of such cookies is usually to track your surfing habits, which is why third-party cookies are considered an invasion of privacy and riskier than first-party cookies. In some instances cookies are used to consolidate and track user behavior across different sites, which provide marketers with private information about you without your knowledge. These are what are referred to as Tracking Cookies.

Aha, now we're getting somewhere!

Because, a Tracking Cookie is a somewhat new term for a cookie that has been design by the above mentioned 'unscrupulous' people that do business on the Web. It is part of the unfortunate phenomenon known as Spyware! But, that's a topic for another whole article!

Golf - The Top Courses

All golfers love to play golf on the nicest courses they can. There is nothing like playing on manicured greens, lush low-cut fairways and amongst beautiful trees, flowers and water. It makes for a memorable experience to say the least.

With that said, let's take things to the highest level and look at what Golf Magazine claims are the top five golf courses in the world.

AUGUSTA GA

1. Pine Valley Golf Club

Pine Valley Golf Club is located in Pine Valley, NJ USA and is consistently ranked number one year after year. The golf course is massive in size. You can literally play every hole and never know that anyone else is even on the course.

Pine Valley is also known as one of the toughest golf courses to play anywhere. It's extremely private and next to impossible to get to play a round on. Pine Valley has been around for many years and has been ranked number one by Golf Magazine ever since 1991. No other golf course in the world offers more in the way of privacy and beauty.

2. Cypress Point Golf Club

Cypress Point Golf Club is located in Pebble Beach, CA USA. Sitting off the Monterrey Peninsula, this golf course is one of the most beautiful you could ever find. You will have a visual experience that you'll never forget with the cypress trees and the waters of the Pacific Ocean just off the fairway.

The 16th hole at Cypress Point has always been called one of the most beautiful par threes anywhere in the world. Anyone can play at Cypress Point since it is not a private golf club.

3. St. Andrews Golf Club

St. Andrews Golf Club is where golf got its start. Located in Fife, Scotland, this course is the oldest golf course in the world. What St. Andrews lacks in visual appeal, it more than makes up for in historical appeal.

St. Andrews is also famous for the 17th hole called the "road hole". The course started in the 12th century and is also known as a "Royal and Ancient" golf club. It simply doesn't get any better than playing a round of golf on the world's oldest golf course.

4. Augusta National Golf Club

Coming in at number four is Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, GA USA. Home to the Masters PGA Golf Tournament, this course is famous for its beautiful manicured grounds, trees and flowers.

Every hole on the golf course is named after a flower. Although this golf course is world famous and arguably one of the most beautiful in the world, the chances of you ever getting to play a round of golf there are slim to none. Augusta National is ultra-private with less than 500 members total.

5. Shinnecock Hills Golf Club

Rounding out the top five is Shinnecock Hills located in Southampton, NY USA. Built in the 1800s, Shinnecock Hills was originally a 12-hole golf course before being turned into an 18-hole course in 1895. Shinnecock Hills Golf Club is known for its undulating, very fast greens, as well as its tight, tree lined fairways.

Playing on one of these top five golf courses may only be a fantasy for just about every golfer, be we can always dream.

Kindle Nook Comparison - Which E-Reader is Right For You?

Before I begin the Kindle Nook comparison I would like to start off by saying that both e-readers are a great product and you probably won't go wrong with either. At the end of the day it's probably going to be a personal preference of how it looks and how it feels. I mean you can look at the dry specs to try and get an idea of what each e-reader is about. But I strongly recommend holding one in your hands before making a final decision. A few more important factors to consider are: what you read, where you read and how much of it do you read.

barnes and noble nook ereader

I'll start off with Barns and Noble's Nook (pronounced like "book" but with an "n").

BARNES AND NOBLE

The Differences Between Kindle 2 and Nook - Which is Better?

Amazon's Kindle 2 and the Barnes and Noble Nook are the two main heavy-weights in the battle of the ebook readers this year. There are many similarities, and critical differences in the two. What are they, and which is the better digital ebook reader? Let's take a look.

barnes and noble

E-Ink Display Screens- Both the Kindle 2 and the Nook use the same "E-Ink" technology for their display screen. Reading for hours on end on these eBook readers isn't like staring at a computer screen. The E-Ink screen displays the words just like (or even better than) looking at a real book.

BARNES AND NOBLE

The Nook, however, has an additional color navigation screen underneath the display screen. This touch screen allows you to scroll through titles of books, magazines, and other publications. There is also a touch keyboard display on this screen. No reviews are available yet for the screen performance, but consumers will soon tell all.

Wireless and 3G- Both the Kindle 2 and the Nook boast wireless capabilities. You are able to download books and other publications if you have access to a wireless network. If no wireless internet is available, then 3G cellular capabilities will allow you to download in that situation.

International Availability- Here is a major difference between the two ebook readers- International capabilities. The Kindle 2 boasts the ability to download books and full usage in over 100 countries, whereas the Nook is only fully functional in the US. Of course the Nook device will work in the sense you can still read books out of the country, but you cannot add more books or publications. This is obviously a very important point for international customers to take into account.

The Nook's Lending Capability- The Nook has the ability to let you lend out your books to others that have downloaded the Barnes and Noble software. You don't necessarily have to have a Nook to receive the lent books, just the software. One should know that lending time is only 2 weeks and the person who lends the book cannot use it during that time. A good feature? Customers will tell over time.

Storage Space- Both the Kindle and Nook have base memory of 2 GB, which is good for about 1,500 books, however the Nook allows for extra space to be added to increase the titles to upwards of 17,500. Is 2 Gigs enough? Well, read one book a day and you'll have 4 years of reading material!

Other Differences- The Kindle boasts a slightly lighter device, text-to-speech technology, and a web browsing capability, whereas the Nook doesn't.

One other notable difference is the Google Android software in the Nook. Barnes and Noble chose this software, banking on the development of applications by software developers that will work with the Nook. We'll have to see how the software performs and if there is an iPod like popularity in applications.

The Basics of a Georgia Divorce

Getting a divorce requires more than going to the court house and filing some paperwork in most cases. If you have never been divorced, here are some basic facts about Georgia divorce.

o In Georgia, you file for divorce in the superior court of the county that the couple considered their home. One of the spouses must have called Georgia home for at least six months. The plaintiff files a complaint. This complaint lists all of the information about the marriage including assets and children born of the marriage.

AUGUSTA GA

o Like most states, Georgia allows no-fault divorce. This cause is common called "irreconcilable differences" or the marriage is listed as "irretrievably broken."

o Georgia recognizes 12 grounds for at fault divorce where one of the parties is accused of wrongdoing. They include adultery, impotency at the time of marriage, pregnancy of the wife at the time of the marriage and the husband did not know, desertion, mental or physical abuse, marriage between relatives, force or fraud in obtaining the marriage, if one spouse has been convicted of a crime, drunkenness or a drug addiction, mental illness, and mental incapacity at the time of the marriage.

o Many spouses still live in the same home when they file for divorce. The court will recognize the couple as separated if the don't share a room or have a sexual relationship.

o Some people don't know they are getting divorce until a sheriff's deputy shows up at their door. The defendant is usually served with the complaint by a deputy.

o An annulment is different from a divorce. Annulments void the marriage completely based on a premise that one of the spouses was unable, unwilling or was fraudulent at the time of the marriage. An annulment cannot be granted if the couple has children.

o Many divorces do no require a hearing. If the spouses can reach agreements, they can file and the agreement that will be accepted as an order of the court. But if children are involved, a judge always makes the decisions regarding child custody and visitation.

o Uncontested divorces are final after 31 days. The time needed for contested divorces depends on how several factors:
1. If there is going to be a hearing and how long it will take for that hearing to be scheduled.
2. How many issues need to be decided. Contested divorces can take months to finalize.

o In some cases, a preliminary hearing may be held. This hearing allows the parties to reach a temporary agreement until the final hearing is held. Many judges will require these hearings to decide temporary custody issues involving children.

The biggest mistake people make in a divorce is not contacting an attorney as soon as they know that divorce is imminent. Even if you think your spouse is going to be fair, you need a Georgia divorce attorney to represent you and protect your rights.

Civil War Commanders - Edward Porter Alexander

One of the youngest general officers on either side in the American Civil War, Edward Porter Alexander was born in Washington, Georgia on May 26, 1835.  He attended the United States Military Academy, graduating third in a class of 38 in 1857.

Prior to the war, Alexander served as an instructor at West Point, as well as on the Utah Expedition against the Mormons in 1857 and 1858.  When his native state seceded from the Union prior to the Civil War, Alexander resigned his commission in the U.S. Army to join the Confederacy.  He began his career in the CSA as a Captain of Engineers, and would rise to the rank of Brigadier General of Artillery by the end of the war.

AUGUSTA GA

Alexander was present at virtually every major battle in the Eastern Theatre, including both first and second Bull Run, the Seven Days, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and the Overland Campaign that ultimately led to the siege of Petersburg and Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox.

Alexander is perhaps best known as the commander of James Longstreet's artillery at the battle of Gettysburg, where he directed the pre-assault bombardment prior to Pickett's Charge.  He is also often given credit for telling General Lee at Fredericksburg that "a chicken could not live on that field" in reference to the open ground before Marye's Heights that would become a Union killing ground in the ensuing battle.

Wounded twice during the war, Alexander would be just short of his thirtieth birthday at the time of Appomattox.  Following the conflict, he held positions as a professor at South Carolina University, served as president of the Louisville and Nashville railroad, and had several political appointments.  He also wrote two memoirs of his experiences in the war, often regarded as some of the most objective first-person accounts of the conflict.

Alexander died on April 28, 1910, and is buried in Augusta, Georgia

Can the Barnes and Noble Nook Compete With the IPad?

Ever since Amazon released their Kindle eReader device in 2007, many other companies have released similar devices. The two most notable of these are Barnes and Noble and Sony, although Apple's iPad will also be an interesting competitor. Given Barnes and Noble's respectability in the book market, their device is definitely one which many people have been hotly anticipating. But how does it compare to the others? If you are thinking about purchasing a Nook or any other eReader in the near future, here is some information about the Nook that you will want to keep in mind.

barnes and noble locations

1. Dual Screen

BARNES AND NOBLE

The first thing you will probably notice about the Nook is that it actually has two separate screens. This makes it quite unique compared to every other device on the market. The bottom portion of the screen is a full color screen with multi-touch display, while the upper screen is a monochrome e-ink display, just like the Kindle's. You can browse through your books on the color screen with a flip of your finger in a display which is highly reminiscent of Apple's Cover Flow display. Turning pages is optimized for both left and right handed folks, and the upper screen is highly responsive to page turns. The color screen uses quite a bit more battery juice than the upper screen. Luckily, they aren't both required to remain turned on at all times. The lower screen will generally turn off automatically after 30 seconds, while the upper screen will go to sleep after about 20 minutes.

2. Connectivity

The Nook can connect and download books either via an AT&T powered 3G wireless connection or through WiFi. Books download just as quickly as on the Kindle. Every day, Barnes and Noble also sends you two free pieces of content written by professional journalists. One is a humor piece and the other is a "this day in history" type piece. If you bring your Nook into a Barnes and Noble store, you can connect via WiFi to gain access to a slew of extras. You can read selected short stories and essays for free, and you can also find coupons for free coffee or cookies from the in-store coffee shop. This is definitely something Amazon and Sony can't offer. Unfortunately, the Nook doesn't come equipped with a web browser like the Kindle does.

3. Book Store

The book store that you can access with your Nook is very intuitive and easy to use. Because it isn't a touch screen device, the store is mostly text-based. You can browse through bestsellers, newspapers, magazines, and by genre. You can also perform a search for your favorite author or title. Once you make a purchase, the book is downloaded to your device within seconds.

4. Technical Specs

Overall, the device looks very similar to the Kindle. However, it is a bit thicker, at half an inch, compared to the Kindle's 3 inches. There is a power button which you can tap once to put the device to sleep. You can also hold it down for about 5 seconds to turn the device off completely. Oddly, the Nook won't charge when it is completely turned off. There is a standard micro USB port on the bottom of the unit, and a slot to insert an SD card. The internal hard drive holds 2GB, so the SD card isn't strictly needed. However, it can be useful for loading PDFs and ePub files into the Nook.

Criteria For an Air Conditioning Repair Repairman

If your air conditioner requires air conditioning repair, how do you find the right person for the job? There are numerous repairman available. The key is to sift through them, to find one that best suits your needs. Here are some of the most important criteria to consider:

1. Schooling
As with any other type of school, vocational schools can be of different calibers. So when comparing different repairmen for air conditioning repair, do some research about the vocational school that he attended. How prestigious is the school generally considered to be? How many years has it been in operation? What percentage of the students finish their training? These are important questions to ask when searching for a repairman.

AUGUSTA GA

2. Bonded
Most companies that specialize in the repairing of air conditioners have good intentions. However, companies that are bonded provide legal protection to their customers, in case they fail to fulfill the contract between them and their customers. While companies usually have the best intentions, it's highly advisable that you find a repairman who's fully bonded.

3. Licensed
It's important that a repairman receive the necessary licenses for air conditioning repair. This will help to ensure that the work he does will be of the highest quality, and meets the industry's standards. While this isn't to say that all licensed repairmen are top-notch, it helps to weed out ones who are unqualified to repair your air conditioner.

4. Experience
When choosing a repairman to fix your air conditioner, you should certainly consider how much experience he has. This is definitely one of the most important factors to consider. Even if a repairman has all of the training and certification required to fix air conditioners, there's simply no replacement for experience practicing one's trade.

5. Professionalism
This characteristic is somewhat subjective, but is still crucial when choosing a repairman. For example, if a repairman constantly arrives late and appears untidy, then you should definitely consider searching for another one.

6. Insured
Remember that "stuff" happens in life. Even if a repairman has the right training and experience to conduct repairs on air conditioners, being insured will help to protect him (and you). That includes situations in which the repairman becomes injured, and ones in which your house experiences damage while repair work is performed. While it's highly unlikely that you'd experience either of these problems, it's better to be safe than sorry.

7. Certification
This helps to guarantee that a particular repairman has met all of the requirements to conduct repairs in a particular region.

If you need repairman for your air conditioner, these issues to consider will help you to find one that best meets your needs. The keys are to start your search early, and to make it thorough.

Should You Buy A Nook Color? Why It Is Better Than An iPad

The Nook Color is better than an iPad. There I said it. But let me just quality that opening shot by saying that some people will be better served by having a Nook Color rather than an iPad, and it's not just because the Nook Color is half the price.

barnes and noble book store

The Apple iPad is a revolution in mainstream computer usage. When it was released in early 2010 it caused a storm of publicity and became the go to gadget for many who were after a mobile solution for just about anything. Mobile web surfing, word processing, defeating Angry Birds, reading the daily newspaper and many more practical applications are all accessible through a device that can be slipped into a messenger bag.

BARNES AND NOBLE

Of course these processes can be performed on other mobile devices but it was the iPad's size that proved a winner. Performing a myriad of processes on a larger screen than a mobile phone was an appealing factor. Mobile phones are wonderful for their primary purpose as well as a number of other things if you are in a pinch but you can hardly write a novel on them. The iPad is great and future versions will be greater.

So what is this Nook Color and why is it better than the iPad (for some people)? The Nook is Barnes and Noble's dedicated ebook reader. The Nook Color is a color version of that ebook reader. It is a different model than the Black and White version in a few ways. Most notably, the regular Nook uses E-Ink technology, while the new Nook Color uses an LCD touch screen. This means that reading the screen in full sunlight will be an issue, whereas E-Ink ereaders can be read anywhere.

Invariably the people that will end up buying a Nook Color will enjoy its smaller size, lighter weight, the fact you can read magazines in color and the convenience of having a number of highly functional applications in their ebook reader. The extra price and weight of the iPad may mean more functionality but it is not the best solution for everyone.

Barnes & Noble Nook Reader Review - Is the Nook E-Reader Better Than Kindle?

I spend a lot of time browsing shops in Orlando because, well, that's where I live, and book stores are high on my list of fun places to shop and while away some hours. The other day I was meeting my mom for lunch and decided to drop in to Barnes & Noble since I don't have one close to my house. As I was checking out with my purchases, the cashier mentioned that the store would be debuting the new nook reader which is an electronic reading device "gadget."

barnes and noble ereader

This caught my attention because I had just been considering putting the Kindle on my Christmas list this year. You know how it is when you log into Amazon, you always see the advertisements for their electronic reader right in your face, and eventually you become brainwashed where you suddenly decide you MUST have one of those (insert name of new gadget here). That's what happened to me with Kindle I think. And I'll be honest with you, I really didn't know a whole lot about it.

BARNES AND NOBLE

So when I heard about the nook reader that B&N is about to unveil, I asked the check-out lady a few questions and then when I got home I decided to check it out on the website. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it actually appears to have more features than Kindle.

So here's the lowdown. They both have 6-inch screen displays so they are easy to read, you can adjust the text size with both devices, and both of them feature 2 GB memory, ability to browse and shop for ebooks, speakers, headphone jack, rechargeable battery, comparable weight, software updates, quick page turn by hard key, synchronized last page read between devices, and ability to read your books on multiple devices.

But, here's what you get on the nook reader that is not available on the "other reader." Color touch screen, touch control and navigation ability, library view by book cover, Wi-Fi, free Wi-Fi in Barnes & Noble stores, expandable memory, more than a million titles, more than half a million free ebooks, exclusive content at B&N, directly load and read PDF's (very helpful), synchronized notes between devices, "LendMe technology" which is where you can share books between nook, iPhone, iPod touch, Blackberry, PC, and Mac, and a replaceable battery.

Sounds good, right? I was impressed. In addition, and this is really key, you can go into Barnes and Noble and try out the nook in person. You can hold it in your hands. Studies have shown that this is key in allowing buyers to make a decision on a purchase. You can sell a lot more when the person can touch as well as see.

I have to say I'm really interested in the nook reader and to be honest, I think it really wins in the head-to-head battle with Kindle by a landslide. Of course, I have not tried out the actual device yet but it will be in stores at the end of November (so I was told). So if you are considering an E-reader you should check out the nook when it becomes available, either for yourself or maybe as a gift.

My Really Huge Communications Blunder

Let's talk about communications blunders for a few minutes. Like everyone else I've made a few, but one of mine really stands out. It's a little story about how to always make doubly sure the person on the end of the phone line understands exactly what you mean, and not just what they think you mean.

As I tell my teenager, it's not whether you know what you're talking about, it's whether the other person knows what you're talking about.

AUGUSTA GA

Like all new doctors, I was finally able to open my own office. It took fourteen grueling, hard years of higher education, and training after high school, but I was ready. I rented an office. I hired a secretary. I bought some old office equipment, and basic furniture. I was ready to go. I was finally a medical doctor, a specialist, a psychiatrist.

Like all the new doctors I'd been watching as they went into practice for the first time, I decided to put an advertisement in the newspaper so people would know there was a new shrink on the block. I hoped maybe somebody would send me a patient or two, or make an appointment, and my children wouldn't starve.

We call those things we doctors put in the paper an announcement, but really they are advertisements and they aren't cheap, especially when you spend your last paycheck on buying one, which is what I did.

My ad said something simple about me. My name, Jim Wallace, M.D. My office address in Augusta, Georgia. My services, "General Psychiatry," and "Psychotherapy."

Well, not exactly. It was supposed to say "Psychotherapy," but it said "Psycho Therapy."

My friends all called me up to make sure I was planning to just practice medicine on "Psychos." Some wanted to know if I was a "Psycho" doing "Psycho Therapy?" It was all in fun, but, believe me, it wasn't funny for me. My idea was to be a seriously good doctor. Maybe not too serious about it, but looking out for my patients, and looking for seriously good outcomes, but that wasn't going to happen if everybody in town got the wrong initial impression.

Obviously, it all worked out. Here I am over 25 years later. But, I really thought the newspaper had shafted me. Of course, it was all my fault for not making 1000% certain the person on the other end of the line and I were on exactly the same page.

Live and learn, right?

The purpose of communication is to communicate, but that's not exactly what I did.
