What is an eReader?

BARNES AND NOBLE

An eReader is an electronic device used to read, you guessed it, electronic books. Some of the big advantages are cheaper cost, ability to store your whole library on one eReader, and portability. They are as small, or even smaller than a typical hardcover book. Although, keep in mind, as with all electronic devices, they are susceptible to damage.

The Cream of the Crop

Apple iPad, even though it is really more like a computer than an eReader, is by far the most talked about eReader on the market today. It can pretty much do what most computers can - download and play videos and music, play games, surf the web. All this in addition to being a standard ebook reader.

However, all that comes with a cost. The cheapest iPad on the market today starts at 9. Ouch! That is a hefty price to pay to simply read books. But, of course, the iPad can do a whole lot more.

Back to Basics

Amazon has the Kindle and Barnes & Noble has the Nook. Both of these are basic eReaders that sell for 9 and even include free shipping and handling. They are obviously in stiff competition with each other.

If you are not an Amazon devotee, then your best bet is to go with the Barnes & Noble Nook. The reviews are showing that the Nook has everything the Kindle has and more. It has WiFi that isn't available on the Kindle. It has a small "control" screen in full color that the Kindle lacks. And, it even allows you to lend books to other Nook users. The Kindle does not... Barnes & Noble will even let you read any ebook in their library for up to an hour for free when you visit one of their stores with your Nook. How cool is that?

Smaller Budget?

If even 9 is too much for your taste, then you might want to consider the Sony Digital Reader Pocket Edition. The screen is a little bit smaller, 5" compared to the Kindle's and Nook's 6" screen, but the price is right at only 9.95. You can only store about 350 eBooks on the Sony, compared with 1,500 on the Kindle and Nook. However, if you are looking for a basic eReader for less than 0, then the Sony is your best bet.

According to the most popular eReader reviews, all of these will do well when it comes to simply reading electronic books. The Sony is a great little eReader for less than 0 but if you need a more fully featured model, then consider the Barnes & Noble Nook. And if money is no object and you want every feature you can possibly get on an eReader, than you'll want to consider the Apple iPad. As more and more eReaders come onto the market, you'll see the prices come down even further. As with most electronic devices, the longer you wait, the cheaper they get. So if these are all out of your budget, sit back and wait a few months. One is surely to come within range soon enough.
