The Augusta Masters Golf Tournament

Arnold Palmer kicked off the 72nd Masters with many people wondering whether Tiger Woods could win yet another tournament. Tiger did in fact struggle on the first two days however few would write him off at this early stage. Tiger is a true fighter and is sure to be there or there abouts on the last day.

The first day at the Augusta National Park will be remembered by a superb whole in one from the Brit Ian Poulter. Poulter renowned from his bizarre collection of clothes which he has seemingly toned down in recent years managed to whole out at the 14th hole much to his delight. His form continued into day two as he stormed to five under par and just three behind the leader Trevor Immelman.

AUGUSTA

Justin Rose was a joint leader at four under par after day one, the third time he has led the masters after the end of the first days play - quite an achievement for the youngster. Rose has a touch of quality about him and many people in the UK are of the belief that a major tournament victory is soon to arrive. Perhaps this could be the week; the bookmakers certainly believe he has a realistic chance, making him second favourite at just seven to one.

I personally believe that Phil Mickelson is the man that everybody needs to beat in this years Masters. Phil was also at five under par on day two and looks a lot leaner and meaner this year. He has been working on his fitness during the close season which could be very beneficial during the latter stages.

I have had a small wager at odds of fifty to one on Paul Casey. At the end of day two he was at four under par and is therefore in the running.

Kindle 3 Vs Kindle 2 - Why Amazon Should Release a Kindle 3 Soon, Very Soon!

Back in November, 2007, Amazon shocked the world with the release of the Kindle eReader. Nobody else had produced an eReader like the Amazon Kindle. It was lightweight, had a great screen for viewing eBooks even in bright light conditions. It also had an extremely long battery life.

barnes and noble

However, since 2007, dozens of manufacturers have come on board with eReaders much more capable than the Kindle. Amazon did respond with the Kindle DX and the Kindle 2, but even those are falling short when it comes to more feature-packed eReaders such as the iPad and Barnes & Noble Nook. Even Borders has released its own eReader, the Kobo, which is over 0 cheaper than the Kindle.

BARNES AND NOBLE

Barnes & Noble came on strong with the release of the Nook. It has every feature that the Kindle does, plus it also boasts a full color control panel at the bottom which the Kindle is clearly lacking. It also includes Wi-Fi, allows one hour of free ebook reading in their stores, and even allows you to lend ebooks to other Nook users. All features that all models of the Kindle do not have. The biggest slap in the face to Amazon came with the price. 9 with free shipping - the exact same price as the Amazon Kindle. So unless you are endebted to Amazon for some reason, why would you even consider the Kindle when you can get the Nook for the same price?

The Apple iPad clearly blows away the Kindle in terms of functionality. Again, the Apple iPad has every feature that the Kindle does, plus much, much more. The iPad includes a full color screen, has the ability to stream video and audio, can download applications built for the iPhone and is really more like a tablet sized computer than an eReader. The only real downside to the iPad is the price. The iPad is almost double the cost of the Kindle. But, if you are looking for the most feature packed eReader on the market today, the iPad is clearly the choice for you.

Borders recently jumped onto the scene with the Kobo eReader. Borders is going for the low-end eReader market as it is priced well below the Kindle at only 0. Although, the Kobo does not have WiFi or even 3G capability, it does have bluetooth and USB connectivity. Is it worth an extra 0 to have 3G or WiFi? They are betting that most potential customers will say no. And if that is true, then Amazon is in trouble. With the Nook coming in at the same price with more features, and the Kobo coming in at 0 less with slightly less features, it doesn't leave much of a market for the Amazon Kindle.

If Amazon wants to keep a piece of the eReader market, they better come out with a Kindle 3, and do it very soon! The competition has come on really strong, and it most certainly isn't going to let up as the market keeps growing. With Apple coming on board, this means some stiff competition in the eReader market. So, Amazon, get with it! Time for a Kindle 3, and it better be sooner rather than later!

Venture Capital Investments in Sports and Entertainment

The venture capital funding world has entered a new sector - this is the always changing sector of Sports and Entertainment. Investments in the entertainment world have been around for a few years already, like the enormous 0 Million investment in the Da Vinci Code film in 2005. And (in a humoristic way) if we remember the book "The Godfather", also there we can find an "investment" in the famous singer Johnny Fontane, a godson of Corleone's, who has come from Hollywood to ask the Godfather's help in getting a movie role that will revitalize his flagging career. Jack Woltz, the head of the studio, will not give Fontane the part, but Don Corleone (The Godfather) explains to Johnny: "I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse."

The costs estimates for creating and marketing a film, given by http://www.imdb.com, the 2005 average marketing cost of million a film. (Marketing costs may be higher for larger films but in many cases sponsors help settle these costs.) the calculation for what the return is from an investment in a film includes the factor that a studio naturally gets the proceeds from approximately half the tickets sold at the USA box office, and the overall take from the box office is roughly one-third of the money a studio earns after a film has gone to play overseas and becomes a DVD or movie on pay TV.

AUGUSTA

The new sector of sports investments is receiving millions of dollars. Recent investments in sports goods producers and distributors include an investment of Million committed by Allied Capital Corporation to support the buyout of Augusta Sportswear Group by private equity firm Quad-C Management. Augusta was founded in 1977, and is among the largest suppliers of blank athletic uniforms in the U.S. The company sells over 52,000 SKUs of team uniforms, athletic apparel, outerwear and school-inspired products to over 40,000 customers, consisting of uniform suppliers, custom decorators and promotional products distributors.

Another recent investment is of Million in Golf Club Maker Nickent in Equity Investment. "We are pleased to announce this investment in Nickent," commented Anthony Moore, Co-Chairman and President of Equus and Chairman of Nickent. "This, combined with our debt financing in June, positions the Fund to receive dual benefits of current income and potential capital gains. We look forward to working with Nickent and its experienced management team."

Nickent is a market leader in the rapidly expanding, hybrid club segment of the golf industry and is an emerging leader in game-enhancement technology.

All these investments are happening now. One last example is Seatwave. Seatwave, Europe's largest fan-to-fan ticket exchange, is an online marketplace for buying and selling tickets for theatre, sports, music and other live events. Seatwave recently announced it has raised million in Series C funding led by Fidelity Ventures. Fidelity Ventures is joined by existing investors Atlas Venture, Mangrove Capital Partners and Adinvest. Seatwave was launched in 2007 and has more than 500,000 tickets on sale at any given time, 25 times more than eBay.

The Rich History of Chrysanthemums

Did you know that those lush, colorful blooms called chrysanthemums are rooted in beliefs of human immortality and perfection? Today the "mum" graces gardens, cut flower arrangements and even salads (yes mums taste great), but they were taken much more seriously after T'ao Yuan Ming started it all in China around 500 A.D.

barnes and noble nook color

Over long periods of careful cross-pollination and selection, he developed stunning varieties of the flower and when he died, his birthplace was renamed Chuhsien. The City of Chrysanthemums. His efforts had produced a legacy that would bring pleasure to this world for centuries.

BARNES AND NOBLE

When China imported the first chrysanthemums to Japan, the people there bestowed many honors upon them. The Japanese wrote legends. To sip dew from the petals meant long life. To eat the flower meant immortality. Philosophers said that the systematic opening of the "ray" flowers symbolized both the sun and the perfection of orderly life.

By 800 A.D. the chrysanthemum had become so prestigious that only royal and noble families were permitted to cultivate it. Among the highest honors that could be bestowed in Japan was admittance to the Order of the Chrysanthemum... a reward granted to nobility for service to the Emperor.

In great contrast to this, the "mum" didn't make much of an impression when traders introduced it to Europe in the 1600s. But when in finally did catch on, it became one of the most popular blooms for both flower shops and gardens.

Today the mum comes in dozens of varieties. Fuji mums project rays with curly ends. Spider mums have straight-ended rays. Starburst mums have forked ends, while spoon-ended mums have a loop at the end of their rays. China mums are called "standard" and "football" because of their large, round heads. Daisy-like mums are called pompons. And those forming tight little balls are called button pomps.

Whether associated with spoons, forks or footballs, or with royalty or immortality, "mum" is the word for beautiful gardens and long-lasting floral arrangements. When you care for them as cut flowers, try to keep their ancient beauty away from such modern-day contraptions as air conditioning, TV sets and heaters. Don't place them in drafts or direct sunlight. Do watch their water, and replace it when needed. This way, a bouquet of mums can make your day every day for at least a week, maybe two.

When to Buy Nook - UK Plays Waiting Game

Despite a whole heap of hype and pre-release promotion, UK buyers are still waiting to see the formal release of Barnes and Noble's much coveted Noon e-reader. Barnes and Noble are yet to confirm a release date for people to buy Nook UK side, but expectant customers are hopeful that 2010 will be the year.

barnes and noble nook

It is possible for UK customers to get their hands on the Nook, the only sticking point being that Nook comes with AT&T wireless, which isn't available in the UK. This won't stop customers downloading, uploading, storing, swapping and lending books with their Nook, it just means they'll have to do it a little more slowly.

BARNES AND NOBLE

So Why All The Fuss?

Nook is being hailed by a lot of people as the new industry standard for e-readers, overtaking Amazon's Kindle and Sony's Reader - but is this actually true?

To a point it is true. Nook does have a superior reading experience, with a paper page like display. It also offers super quick downloads and the option of book sharing. So it is quite a leap forward from the previous generation of e-readers.

But Apple's Tablet is on the horizon, which is set to once again redefine the way we consume media and Amazon's Kindle DX with its mega wide screen certainly goes some way to gain ground on Nook. But as it currently stands - Nook is in the lead. Just.

And the key phrase there is 'as it stands'. This is the gadget industry we're talking about here, things change over night and standards are redefined with every new product launch.

So it worth the investment?

Yes, I would say buy Nook. I'd even say buy Nook UK side too, because it is currently as advanced feature wise as you can get. Tablet aside, it won't be another 12 months before anybody redefines the use of e-readers, they'll just refine the functionality, so your Nook may be slightly passe this time next year, but it will still be of equivalent functionality as the latest models.

Homeless in 2008 in Georgia

What is homelessness?

Homelessness is a difficult and complex issue. So much so, that there is even disagreement over the definition of who is truly homeless and who is not. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) defines someone as "homeless" if he or she:

AUGUSTA GA

- resides in an emergency shelter or in transitional/ supportive housing for
homeless persons; or
- resides in a place not meant for human habitation, such as cars, parks, sidewalks,
abandoned buildings, encampments, and dilapidated buildings.

The U.S. Department of Education uses an expanded definition that also includes
people who are:

o doubled up with family or friends due to economic condition
o living in motels and hotels for lack of other suitable housing
o migrant workers living in housing not fit for habitation

The State of Georgia, in the Act that created the State Housing Trust Fund for the Homeless in 1988, defined homelessness as "persons and families who have no access to or can reasonably be expected not to have access to either traditional or permanent housing which can be considered safe, sanitary, decent, and affordable."1 Because of the important variations in the definition of homelessness, this report primarily uses the more narrow HUD definition, except when otherwise noted.

What is chronic homelessness?

About 25% of the homeless population experience long spells of homelessness or have had numerous homeless episodes.2 These chronically homeless individuals use a disproportionate share of public services and are vulnerable to continued homelessness. HUD considers someone chronically homeless if he or she is unaccompanied, has a disabling condition and has been homeless continuously for a year or has had at least four episodes of homelessness in the past three years.

What is the impact of homelessness?

Homelessness has a profound impact on the individuals and families it affects including increased health problems, increased mental health problems, difficulty with maintaining employment, separation of families, and so on. Although we can sympathize with people who are in difficult straits, it is fair to ask why homelessness matters to the community at large. Homelessness affects more than just an individual or family. It affects the whole community in a number of ways.

The costs of homelessness include:

o poor educational attainment and development among homeless children
o uninsured medical costs for a population with a high rate of disability
o public safety costs including police and jail costs for offenses such as
panhandling, loitering, or vagrancy
o sanitation and litter control in parks and public spaces where homeless people
congregate
o high cost of emergency shelters, transitional housing, and supportive services for
individuals and families experiencing homelessness
o high cost of crisis services such as emergency room and ambulance services
and inpatient hospitalization for acute and chronic health conditions as well as
mental health crises
o lost wages and revenue from individuals that would otherwise be able to work if they had a permanent address

How many people are homeless in Georgia?

The difficulties of counting the homeless in any single community, much less a large state, have been discussed in detail by both researchers and advocates for the homeless. This report will not presume to provide a single, definitive, and indisputable number of persons who are homeless in Georgia. However, it is important to have at least some understanding of the magnitude and scope of the problem. Fortunately, a significant amount of data from multiple sources is available to indicate how many people in the state face the dreadful prospect of no place to live.

Point in Time Homeless Counts

The federal response to the problem of homelessness is embodied in the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, first passed in 1987. The McKinney-Vento programs are administered by many federal agencies including HUD. In order to receive federal funding, communities must organize services within a Continuum of Care umbrella. In 2003, the U.S. Congress passed legislation requiring that the Continuums of Care conduct point-in-time homeless counts once every two years. Accordingly, each of Georgia's Continuums of Care (CoCs) have been engaged in an effort to count the state's sheltered and unsheltered homeless population.

The CoCs that cover Chatham, Cobb, DeKalb, and Fulton Counties and the consolidated
governments of Athens-Clarke, Augusta- Richmond, and Columbus-Muscogee conduct
homeless counts annually or biennially. For example, every other year, the Metro Atlanta
Tri-Jurisdictional Collaborative on Homelessness (Tri-J), comprised of the City of Atlanta, Fulton
County, and DeKalb County, has over 500 volunteers and staff walk and drive the entire 750
square miles of the jurisdiction from midnight to 5 a.m., looking for unsheltered homeless people.

This national best practice canvassing model is coordinated by Pathways Community Network for the Tri-J. On the same night, the Tri-J conducts a census of its emergency shelter and transitional housing beds. On January 25, 2007, the Tri-J count identified 6,840 sheltered and unsheltered homeless people in the two county area.

Because the Balance of the State covers 152 counties, many of them rural, the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) has always performed an annual assessment of persons in shelters and transitional housing, but until 2008 did not have a feasible way to count unsheltered homeless people. Beginning this year, DCA used a sampling methodology and predictive model developed by statistics faculty at Kennesaw State University.5 The methodology took the unsheltered homeless count in 23 counties to arrive at a predicted count of unsheltered homeless persons by county. The count data used in the model included counts from 2007 and 2008. The counts conducted in the Balance of the State were done using surveys primarily collected at locations where people receive services. All of the count efforts around the state, along with the model, indicate that there were over 20,000 people in Georgia who were homeless at a single Point-In-Time (a one-night snap shot) during the last week in January.

The homeless count surveys collected in January 2008 also included a question about the length of time that people had been homeless. Using a weighted average of those responses provides an estimate of over 75,000 people who experience homelessness in Georgia at some time during one year Who is homeless in Georgia? As part of the point-in-time count in January 2008, 1,578 unduplicated surveys were collected from people around the state who were having housing difficulties. The surveys focused on the housing status of the survey respondents and their families (2,041 people) on the night of January 27, 2008. The housing status of the survey respondents and their families is shown in the table below.

The people categorized as "precariously housed" were staying with family or friends or in hotels/motels. These people would be considered homeless under the more expansive U.S. Department of Education definition of homelessness, but not under the definition adopted by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Children were more likely to be in families that were precariously housed or living in homeless shelters. About 71% of the survey respondents who were precariously housed were women. The unsheltered homeless were generally middle aged adults, 59% of those survey respondents were men. The sheltered homeless were split almost evenly between women and men. Using the broader definition of homelessness, the majority of Georgia's homeless population are women and children. What causes homelessness in Georgia?

Two factors play a huge part in the lives of people who become homeless: extreme
poverty and personal vulnerability.

Extreme Poverty - People can become homeless because of:

o very low incomes,
o unemployment, or
o the lack of available affordable housing.

Income and the cost of housing

People who are poor face a much higher risk of becoming homeless. Georgia's poorest
citizens, who earn 50% or less of the poverty level, are at particular risk.

Personal Vulnerability

The other factor that plays a role for many people that experience homelessness is a
personal situation that leaves them vulnerable to the loss of housing, such as:

o mental illness
o substance abuse
o developmental disabilities or brain injury
o physical disabilities or chronic medical problems
o family violence
o prior evictions or poor credit
o criminal background

Many individuals and families have personal vulnerabilities that place them at significant risk of becoming homeless. Disabilities, including mental illness and drug and alcohol abuse, exact a terrible toll on people. In the 2007 Metro Atlanta Tri-Jurisdiction Survey, about 58% of the respondents indicated that they had one or more disabilities. Of those, 22% had multiple disabilities. From a survey of 24 cities, the U.S. Conference of Mayors estimates that about 22% of the homeless population suffers from a severe mental illness. Domestic violence plays a significant role in homelessness among women and children. In a 1998 study of homeless parents in ten U.S cities (most of whom were women), 22% said that they had left their last place of residence because of domestic violence.

Past experiences and behaviors can also create significant barriers for individuals and families who are trying to escape homelessness. Being homeless can lead to arrests for behaviors such as trespassing and loitering. Criminal offenses such as these, and certainly more serious convictions, can make it difficult to pass a required background check when trying to rent permanent housing. Additionally, certain felony convictions make it difficult to obtain a bed in an emergency shelter. Likewise, prior evictions and poor credit can make it difficult to rent decent affordable housing.

Nook Or Kindle? New Developments In 2011 Creating A Stir

The choice for many people searching for ebook readers in 2011 still comes down to the Nook or Kindle. There are other ereader choices on the market, but the most popular devices by far are still the Nook and Kindle. Let's take a look at an updated comparison of the two and uncover some controversial developments.

barnes and noble ereader

Nook and Kindle Physical Design-

BARNES AND NOBLE

Both the Nook and Kindle are similar with same size reading screens, but the 3rd generation Kindle (Kindle 3) has a slimmed down design compared to the Nook. The Kindle 3 is noticeably smaller and lighter than the Nook. Barnes and Noble's device has gone through little or no noticeable changes from the original physical design released in 2009.

The Nook has updated its software to version 1.5, allowing for sorting of titles into "shelves", giving the ability to password protect the device, and giving it the ability to sync between devices. Amazon's Kindle allows you to do all these things with their products as well.

Differences Between Nook and Kindle-

Their are some obvious and not-so-obvious differences between the two devices.

Navigation: The Nook has a color touch screen underneath the reading screen that allows for the user to scroll between and within the titles using the swipe and touch of a finger. The Kindle is pure push-button technology. This technology difference alone is a source of love or hate for each product depending on the customer.

Battery Life: Battery life on one charge differs greatly between the two devices. The Kindle is 30 days with the wireless off, whereas the Nook has a max time of around 10 days with wireless off.

Memory: The Nook has expandable memory, with a standard memory of approximately 1,500 titles. The Kindle has a standard (not expandable) memory of 3,500 titles.

Speed Of Device: Both devices are very comparable in page turn speed. It is apparent when watching both devices work side-by-side, however, that the push button technology for scrolling through the text itself is a little faster.

International Capabilities: Only the Kindle works in foreign countries with the 3G wireless. Otherwise, of course the Nook works anywhere in the world, one just has to think ahead and download titles on the internet.

New Developments Proving To Shake Up The Battle

EPUB Issue: Only the Nook allows for use of the "Epub" file. Why is this important? Public libraries across the country are slowly becoming capable of lending out digital content via "Adobe DRM" software. Not all libraries are there yet, but they are getting there soon.

This issue alone is causing many people to thumb their noses at Amazon and buy the Nook. How will Amazon respond in 2011? They can't ignore this issue forever, or they will get left in the dust, right? We'll have to wait and see.

Amazon's Faulty Covers: Many people this holiday season were getting Kindles that seemed to have a strange problem...They kept re-setting! Amazon worked with numerous people, sending them new Kindles, only to have the same problem happen over and over.

The culprit has now been found and officially acknowledged by Amazon. It was the "non-lighted Kindle covers" that were apparently causing the constant resetting of the devices.

Amazon is attempting to resolve the problem by sending a free "lighted cover" to customers having trouble.

There are some major differences one can see when choosing between the Nook or Kindle, and it will ultimately come down to preference. Both devices are leading the market in ebook reader sales because they are both considered solid products.

Differences Between Kindle 3 and Nook - Which Is Better?

Amazon's new Kindle 3 is the new product on the ebook reader market, so how does it compare to the popular Nook from Barnes and Noble? What are the differences between the two and which is better? Let's take a close look.

barnes and noble nook ereader

Memory Capacity- The Nook allows for 1,500 books to be stored on the device for it's out-of-the-box standard memory, but it also allows for expanded memory by adding a larger SD card. The Kindle comes standard with a little over double the memory and allows for 3,500 books.

BARNES AND NOBLE

Push Button Vs. Color Touch Screen- The Kindle has always been push button technology, and it's 3rd generation isn't any different. The Nook has a 1" high color touch screen that doubles as a touch keyboard for navigation.

Battery Life- The last feature relates directly to this one. With a color touch screen, the Nook has a considerably shorter one-charge usage time of 10 days with the wireless off, versus the Kindle's 30 day one-charge usage time.

E-Ink Display Screens- Both the Nook and Kindle use "E-Ink" screens that allow for reading in high lighting situations and at extreme angles. Amazon has improved the contrast on this version of the Kindle by 50%.

Size and Weight- The Kindle 3 is just over 3 ounces less than the Nook at 8.5 and 8.7 ounces for the WiFi only and WiFi + 3G models.

WiFi and WiFi + 3G Models- Both companies have released two versions of the 6" reading display ebook readers. The WiFi only models will work in any wireless hotspot, whereas the 3G models work through AT&T 3G wireless service. It should be noted that contracts aren't needed.

Price Drops- Perhaps it is because ebook readers need to differentiate themselves from the iPad, or just a good old-fashioned price war, but both the Nook and Kindle have dramatically dropped their prices for both models compared to this time last year.

Book Availability- Amazon and Barnes and Noble both have a high percentage (over 95%) of the bestsellers available in their ebook stores, as well as 1,000's of free titles that are older public domain books, such as Count of Monte Cristo, or Pride and Prejudice.

Lending Ability- Only the Nook allows for lending of books for up to two weeks to others with the Nook or Nook apps. The lender cannot use the lent material at that time.

The above points show numerous examples of the differences between the new Kindle 3 and Nook.

Barnes and Noble Nook Color - A Great Improvement in eBook Readers

With its vibrant touchscreen LCD display, Android 2.1 operating system, and advanced web-browsing capabilities, many have written off the Barnes and Noble Nook Color as a "poor man's iPad". Not only is this statement unfair, it also misinterprets Barnes and Noble's intended use for the Nook Color. A better explanation could be that the Nook Color is an excellent e-reader that performs many of a tablet PC's functions, adequately. This is much in the same way that the iPad is an excellent tablet PC that can perform the functions of a dedicated e-reader, adequately.

barnes and noble nook ereader

The first thing a person notices about the Nook is the bright seven inch touchscreen. Looks-wise, it rivals the iPad for vibrance and clarity. In the touchscreen functionality, it's very good and capable, just not as completely polished as the iPad. The backlit LCD means that you'll only be able to squeeze about eight hours of reading time out of the unit before it will need recharging. This is the trade-off between E Ink and LCD screens, but once you see how well the new screen lends itself for reading magazines on the Nook Color, you'll agree that this trade can be worth it.

BARNES AND NOBLE

Another way the Nook is confused for a tablet PC is the fact that it runs the Android 2.1 operating system. The menus look quite a lot like those of the Samsung Galaxy Tablet. However, it is lacking something that every other Android device has, access to the Android Marketplace. By omitting the marketplace, Barnes and Noble are sending a clear message that the Nook Color is first and foremost, an eBook reader. While the included app selections are minimal, they do include favorites like Pandora Radio and QuickOffice.

Rounding out the Nook is the list of features it shares with the previous Nook, some of which give it a nice advantage over Amazon.com's Kindle. First among these is support for ePub files. Many public libraries feature the ability to download selections for free in the ePub format to a user's computer. The user can then just load the file onto their Nook Color via USB. Additionally, the Nook is designed so that there are incentives for a user to bring the Nook with then when they go to a Barnes and Noble store. Users will be able to read up to one hour of a book per day for free via in-store WiFi. They will also be able to allow friends to "borrow" certain eBooks for up to fourteen days.

The Nook Color is a good choice for someone who is looking for an excellent eBook reader, with just a little something extra. The bright LCD touchscreen makes the reading experience (especially magazines) all the more enjoyable. Features like ePub support and in-store features serve to give it a distinct advantage over the segment leading Kindle. User's that don't particularly need, or want the expense of, the iPads extensive multi-functionality, will appreciate the modest suite of apps packed into the Nook Color. All in all, at 9, there is quite a bit of value here.

Merle Temple - Last of the Boy Scouts

Merle Temple...Last of the Boy Scouts, Part 1

"I never knew a man who had better motives for all the trouble he caused..." Graham Greene, The Quiet American

AUGUSTA GA

Merle Temple, quintessential choir boy, most courteous in high school, American Legion award winner, and boy scout, wandered in to the contentious political minefield of Atlanta in 2001 like some modern day Don Quixote looking for windmills to joust with to salve the ache of the missed adventure he passed up when President Ronald Reagan offered him a job in the White House all those years ago. But, it just didn't work out as he had planned--no, not at all.

Temple, the descendant of Puritans, was a pillar of the Augusta Georgia community and the leading fundraiser and chairman for non-profits in town. He also was an anti-establishment crusader and lone ranger always searching for new dragons to slay. He had grown tired of his cushy job as a successful BellSouth public relations director, where an executive said he lived "not on the cutting edge, but the bleeding edge." His search for the ultimate fight had already left him bleeding from managing what was called the "biggest upset in Georgia political history in fifty years."

State Rep. Robin Williams was a mover and shaker in Georgia politics. Despite threats from the local newspaper and incumbent politicians, Temple, with quiet help from Congressman Charlie Norwood, raised money and managed a newcomer's campaign against the heavily favored Williams who did not carry a single precinct when the dust settled. Temple earned some first class enemies including the Augusta Chronicle editorial staff, who supported Williams who brought home the bacon for their billionaire publisher, and Georgia Republican Congressmen, who hated to see any incumbent lose.

Temple's employer summoned him to Atlanta to tell him that he had angered powerful allies in the legislature, and local media pals of Williams--a local newspaper editor and radio talk show host. Temple, who had won every BellSouth award in his department, was told by Georgia President Phil Jacobs that he must surrender his first amendment rights. Rather than dare them to enforce that edict as he should have, he was disheartened, demanded a severance package, and retired.

Norwood came to his rescue and tried to secure the Southern District U.S. Marshall slot for him. Temple had a Masters in Criminal Justice from Ole Miss, had been a state police captain in his youth, and the State Criminal Justice Chairman for the Reagan campaign in Ms. His close friend, U.S. Senator Paul Coverdell would have made all the appointments for the new George W. Bush administration, but Coverdell died suddenly with an aneurism at 62. That left appointments and political spoils to the Georgia republican congressmen. Not good--not good at all. Meetings with federal judges ensued and trips to Washington, but the infighting proved more than Norwood could overcome, and Temple threw in the towel.

Out of the shadows of fate came Georgia State Superintendent of Schools, Linda Schrenko. Temple, a chamber of commerce education chairman and well known reform advocate, was her East Georgia Business Chairman. He had helped manage her reelection campaign in 1998 when she won in a three-way race with a democrat and libertarian. Schrenko said that Bush's loss was "her gain," and offered Temple an appointment as one of her four deputy superintendents of schools.

In a move that would change his whole life, destroy his public image, and land him in prison, Temple accepted her offer, and rode in to conquer Atlanta just as he had every other foe on the field of battle before...but this time, the dragons were bigger and nastier, and his worst enemy...turned out to be just down the hall from his new office.

Merle Temple...Last of the Boy Scouts, Part 2

"In the middle of life's journey, I found myself in a dark wood. I had wandered from the straight path...it was such a thick, wild, and rough forest that when I think of it my fear returns...I can't offer any good explanation of how I entered it..."--Dante's Inferno.

Linda Schrenko was Merle Temple's political hero when he entered the nest of vipers at the Georgia Department of Education in 2001. They were political associates, not personal friends, and he had no knowledge of the libertine past that haunted the highest elected republican woman in Georgia history, or the true depth of the animus toward her from the Atlanta establishment, both political parties, the Atlanta Journal Constitution, and the State Board of Education.

Schrenko had been named the top female republican in the country, but was under siege. Temple thought he could bring his business acumen, political skills, and his tireless perfectionism and idealism to the leviathan that awaited him, and it would only be a matter of time before all surrendered, and he could go back home to care for his ailing wife as he always had.

However, he was no General Sherman on a march through the old South. His Hollywood script did not play in Atlanta where the last bastion of the all democrat controlled state would be gone within two years, but was then in an angry and ruthless survival mode. Schrenko was thought to be running for governor, and the State Board of Education, appointed by her enemy, Governor Roy Barnes, was at her throat and those of her staff every day, holding monthly meetings that were partisan blood lettings and torture of education employees. Barnes, who became known as "King Roy," began to push his political appointees to secure federal education funds for the shadow government he was building.

The Assistant U.S. Secretary of Education told Temple to hold firm against any diversion and promised prosecution of misused funds. She repeated this to Temple and Schrenko in front of U.S. Secretary Rod Paige. A mole for Barnes in the Georgia Department was escorted from the building and promptly appointed as Barnes' education czar. Temple's phone rang off the hook almost daily with pleas for help from other agencies who said that Barnes was seizing control of everything in Georgia--appointing super directors to bypass agency heads, the legislature, and constitutionally elected officials. State police--roads and bridges--the port authority-- the department of transportation---it was empire building on a massive scale. State troopers warned Schrenko to be careful on the road lest she be jailed by troopers who were in the enemy camp.

Then, a dozen or so White House and U.S. Education officials told Temple on a conference call that they had "reconsidered." They would allow Barnes to divert all the funds he wanted. Absent were the administrators who told Temple to hold firm and enforce the law. These politicos said that to make it easier for the Barnes machine, they would send the money not to the Georgia Department of Education, but to the State Board of Education which was not an agency and had no lawful standing or structural apparatus to receive or disburse money. This was surreal to Temple and the moment he really knew how alone they were and that no help was coming from fellow republicans.

Temple was shaken and compared it to Wells Fargo calling the local bank to tell them that there were bank robbers in town, and to hold down trouble, their armored trucks would now just deliver the money directly to the bank robbers. Schrenko told Temple that a conservative in the White House said that she was being thrown under the bus by the Bush administration who wanted a Barnes endorsement of Bush's No Child Left Behind education bill...the only democratic governor to do so then.

Temple wondered what he had gotten into, but it was about to get worse...much worse.

Merle Temple...Last of the Boy Scouts, Part 3

"...She caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him. Samson, Samson, the Philistines be upon you...and the Philistines took him..." (Judges 16:19-21)

Merle Temple arrived in Atlanta in the spring of 2001 to save the day for the embattled Georgia Superintendent of Education. By the winter of despair in early 2002, abandoned by the press--shunned by U.S. Ed--rejected by the President of the United States and republicans--he should have gone home to Augusta. It was not to be.

In the wake of the Bush sellout, Superintendent Linda Schrenko began a strategy to spend as much as possible before the State Board of Education could divert it to Barnes. She claimed her legal 5% of federal funds for administrative costs, and awarded grants to local schools. A million dollars or so went to schools--not Roy Barnes. The Board was furious, and tensions grew even worse. Amidst threats and phone sweeps for bugs--leaks and paranoia grew by leaps and bounds.

The fight with Barnes and Washington only exacerbated an already fractured and dysfunctional organization rife with infighting and jockeying for power. Temple's Don Quixote idealism intensified to rescue the damsel in distress, and dispatch the villains violating the law. Amidst the carnage, Temple began to take increasing amounts of drugs prescribed to manage fibromyalgia pain, and panic attacks. His doctors gave him testosterone to boost his strength and injections for pain. His house was burning down, but he couldn't walk away from the woman who told him of abuse throughout her life, and had black eyes when he picked her up for trips--tugging at the heart of the Boy Scout. She increasingly came to visit him to tell of the loss of her soul to the devil in an ill advised incantation as a young woman--later telling him that she knew what she was doing in these visits. He was the only one who didn't get it. Thrown together on the campaign trail, he found himself violating an unshakable moral code. He lost his center in her darkness. He lost himself. He never knew what hit him.

Republican leaders did not want Schrenko as their candidate for governor because they feared she would cut the pork that they wanted when they gained power. So, they blessed Sonny Perdue, a lifelong democrat who had switched parties. Schrenko awarded vendor contracts for the State Schools for the blind and deaf in a bit of flawed "Iran-Contra"--kill two birds with the same stone--strategy to benefit the schools as well as her campaign. Around 0,000 came to her campaign, none of which Temple benefited from. The media said the money came from funds meant for blind children, but no money was allotted them except in contracts that Schrenko used to end run the board before they could divert the money to Barnes.

When the feds pursued indictments after Schrenko lost in the republican primary, Temple was mystified that, despite mistakes, no one acknowledged their efforts to deny theft and defend the constitution, but he looked at the laws the feds had, and urged her to plead. Schrenko said no--she had done nothing wrong. He was barred from talking to her, but she emailed constantly to play on his protective nature and sympathy, and influence his testimony as she again led him down the path to destruction.

In an argument with prosecutors, Temple became angry over perceived pressure to tow the government line in a way he was not prepared to do. He told her that he would tell the truth on the stand about Barnes and Bush. When he refused to abandon his wife as Schrenko demanded, she mocked his wife and told him coldly, "You've made your choice." She notified the prosecutors that he called her, and he was arrested, shackled, and jailed in Atlanta where he nearly died from forced drug withdrawal. While he was near death, Schrenko, the master of the victim opera, appeared on television to blame everything on him, and testify for the prosecutor who changed all the facts to paint his former witness as the mastermind. When Temple almost died, Schrenko wrote him--"I'm sorry for any harm...thought they would just yell at you..."

Temple, the figure in this Shakespearean style tragedy whose story has not been told, reimbursed the amount of the money that came to Schrenko's campaign though he benefited from none of it. He would have received little or no time if he had not contacted Schrenko, but he remains in prison in 2011, having served over four and a half years, longer than many violent, repeat offenders. The prosecutor, Russell Vineyard, who did not recuse himself although awaiting a Bush appointment, is now a federal magistrate--all of his rants to the federal judge regarding releasing Temple on bail were edited out of sanitized court transcripts erasing evidence of how personal Temple's rebellion was to a man awaiting an appointment from the man Temple wanted to expose. Schrenko netted no time off for her betrayal of the most loyal aide she had, only public exposure of her darkness--a metaphor for a kind of murder-suicide of two lives that gained her nothing but exposure as a woman scorned. No one was ever prosecuted for the diversion of many millions in federal money, or had to pay any of the money back.

Temple's wife of 37 years, Susan, whose heart was hidden in Christ, never abandoned him, and viewed Schrenko as her husband's Delilah. Susan died from a long illness in 2007. The prison defied the order of a judge, and refused to let him attend her funeral. Her last note to Temple was, "Be good until we meet again."

Even Temple's enemies could not deny that he was a tireless worker for the disenfranchised in his life for no gain--always the naive idealist fighting the machine. He was given eight years--more than politicians who bribed judges and pocketed millions, but he was subdued by God as he lay near death in the Atlanta jail and found new birth and eternal life in brokenness. He ministers to the broken in prison, and leads weekly Christian movie nights that have exposed over two thousand men to the gospel and saving grace of Jesus Christ. Ordained a minister and married to a childhood friend in 2010, he has long since forgiven Schrenko and all involved, and finally himself. He has filed in Birmingham federal district court to have the honest services counts dismissed, and to tell what God has done for him in prison.

He only says, "It is here that I learned as C.S. Lewis once wrote, that I am not just some soldier of fortune, a body with a soul--but a soul with a body, and that God works His will through me as a spiritual being. I searched for peace and found the only peace there is through the Prince of Peace. Here in this awful pain and grief, He gave me eternal life. How can I then say that it has not all been worth it? "

Review: The Top Three EBook EReaders on the Market Today

Ereaders offer one of the most exciting and practical technologies to come out in recent years. Read on to learn about 3 of the most popular eReaders available on the market.

barnes and noble nook

Sony Pocket Edition

BARNES AND NOBLE

Sony offers a relatively large line of eReaders, but its most recent and popular addition to the field is Pocket Edition.

Instead of attempting to compete with other eReaders when it comes to high-tech expanded functionality, the Sony Pocket focuses on performing its eReader capabilities very well, and by being the smallest functional eReader on the market. This device measures 6.25 x 4.25 x.40625 inches. On paper it might not sound like the Sony Pocket is that much smaller than other eReaders like the Kindle and the Nook Color, but in person the Pocket Edition looks and feels significantly more compact and lighter than those other popular models.

While the Sony Pocket Edition can't compete with the Nook Color when it comes to processing power or functionality, it does feature a few higher end capabilities that you might not expect- like a full touchscreen interface. Unfortunately, certain standard features that consumers come to expect from eReaders, such as wireless connectivity, aren't packed into the Pocket Edition.

Kindle

Amazon's Kindle still stands as the most popular and well known eReader available on the market, despite the fact that it isn't remotely the most powerful or feature-laden device out there. The Kindle is a great example of how the most popular device in a market isn't always the best device in a market.

Now the Kindle is a great dedicated eReader, supporting a variety of different file formats. Most ebooks read on the Kindle are purchased through Amazon's online bookstore, which is the internet's most popular and widely used bookstore. Most people are intimately familiar with Amazon's online bookstore, which makes stocking your Kindle a simple and intuitive matter. Books purchased through Amazon's website will automatically download onto your Kindle as soon as you connect your device to a wireless signal, though you can also use that wireless signal to access Amazon's bookstore directly from your device.

Like many other eReader the Kindle uses what's called an eInk display. Many people find that eInk displays are easier to read and provide less eyestrain over long reading periods. While this eInk display makes the Kindle arguably superior to devices with LCD displays when it comes to reading books, it also greatly limits the Kindle's functionality. Amazon is currently working on a way to provide web browsing and other tablet-like functions to the Kindle, but these applications are currently barely functional at best.

Nook Color

On the other hand the Nook Color, with its high-level internal processing power and full color LCD screen, handles web browsing and other tablet-like applications with ease. In fact, many people find that the Nook Color functions great as a low-cost alternative to dedicated tablet PCs like the iPad. The Nook Color comes bundled with a few common applications, such as Pandora radio and full web browsing, but it also can be tweaked slightly to run nearly every app available for its Android operating system.

While the Kindle has rudimentary audio functionality, the Nook Color features full multimedia support and is able to play both music and videos with ease. In addition to the aforementioned Pandora radio application the Nook Color comes bundled with media galleries and multimedia games. While the Nook Color doesn't yet feature the same third-party support that the iPhone or iPad provides when it comes to producing apps, Barnes and Nobles is presently working to open up their device to these outside developers.

While some people prefer to read from eInk displays, the Nook Colors full LCD display allows you to read full-color books, comics, magazines and other publications that are either unavailable on eInk devices, or which are only available in severely limited forms.

Like the Sony Pocket the Nook Color also eschews the traditional small keyboard navigation still found on the Kindle and features a full touchscreen interface and streamlined navigational systems.

While the Nook Color can't boast that it connects to the most popular and widely used online bookstore available (Amazon), it does connect to the second most popular and widely used online bookstore available- Barnes and Nobles online. While there might be a volume or two that you can find on Amazon that isn't available on Barnes and Nobles' online bookstore, chances are you won't have any complaints about this arrangement.

AUGUSTA GA

Masters tickets are hands down the premium golf ticket in the world. Masters tickets are hands down the toughest ticket to get in all of sports. Masters tickets are handed down from generation to generation and caused pitched battles in divorce proceedings.

Augusta National, the site of the annual Masters tournament, does not allow women as members and doesn't want to change that, despite repeated protests. National Council of Women's Organizations, sent a nine-sentence letter to the Augusta National Golf Club-host of the prestigious Masters tournament-asking it to review its policy of barring women. Augusta is Georgia's second oldest city and known for the Master's Golf Tournament. Augusta is also the second largest city in GA and is "just the right size".This city is home to the legendary Masters Golf Tournament and offers the very best in shopping, dining and recreational opportunities. Augusta National, designed by Allister MacKenzie, would be a treasured golf course even if it never hosted a professional golf event.

With a history dating back to 1934, the Masters is also one of the oldest golf tournaments around in addition to being arguably the most important. One of the things that make the Masters special is that organizers stick to a strict limit on the sales of Masters tickets, meaning that you won't experience the overcrowding that is now common at some tournaments.

Tickets to the Masters, or series badges as they are referred to by the pretentious club, are only sold to longtime patrons of the club. All Masters Tickets (Augusta National) obtained are sold over face value based upon the current market value and availability of the ticket.

Held at Augusta National Golf Club each year in April, the Masters Tournament is a well-established tournament and regular stop for qualifiers on the PGA tour. Today, the Masters golf tournament is one of the world's most watched and prestigious tournaments. The Masters Golf Tournament is without a doubt the most prestigious event in golf today. It is a tradition like no other in sport.

Is the Kindle in Color?

The simple answer is no. But there is a solution... From surfing the web on the Kindle's browser, WebKit - to reading magazines and eBooks - it's all in black and white. No doubt you've arrived at this article after searching "is the Kindle in Color". Well now you have your answer - so what's the solution?

barnesandnoble.com

The Solution

BARNES AND NOBLE

Introducing the Barnes & Noble Nook. The Nook is in many ways better than the Kindle. In fact, its reviews have been on par, if not better than the Kindle. The Nook's discreet existence is no doubt a result of Amazon's huge marketing capabilities, but it is completely unjustified. The Nook is a serious option for those interested in getting a Kindle but want the color!

Let's take a look at the specs:

Amazon Kindle 3

Full Color: Yes
Dimensions: 7.7″(H) 4.9″(W) 0.5″(D)
Weight: 11.6 ounces
Display: 6" Monochrome E Ink Touch Screen
Battery Life: Up to 30 days
Recharge Time: 4 to 6 hours

Barnes & Noble Nook

Full Color: Yes
Dimensions: 7.7″(H) 4.9″(W) 0.5″(D)
Weight: 11.6 ounces
Display: 6" Monochrome E Ink Touch Screen
Battery Life: Up to 7 to 10 days
Recharge Time: 3.5 hours

The decision you have now is not cut and dry. Do you take full color display over battery life or vice versa? With every other aspect of the two devices being fairly similar, there really isn't much in it. What's great about the Nook is that magazines and chrildren's books are really brought to life with the color display. However if you're a serious newspaper reader and are more concerned about being able to keep the thing switched on constantly then the Kindle is for you. Although I must stress that a 7 to 10 day battery life is not to be shunned at!

Understanding Absence Without Leave - AWOL

Any individual in the military must fully understand what "absence without leave" entails.

You can be charged with "absence without leave" for the following:

AUGUSTA GA

1. If you fail to go to an appointed place when you are supposed to.

This means that if someone with authority over you gives you an order to be at a specific place of duty at a certain time and you do not comply, you can be charged with "absence without leave."

2. You left your place of duty without authorization.

You were fully aware that you were ordered to be at a specific place at a specific time but you chose on your own accord to disobey the order by leaving.

3. You took unauthorized leave from your unit or place of duty when you knew you had been ordered to be there at a certain time and place.

Your absence was not authorized by anyone in a position of authority. Additionally, your absence was for a specific period of time. It will also be noted if your unauthorized leave came to an end because you were apprehended.

4. You will be considered absent without leave if you abandon your watch or guard.

If you were assigned to a position of watch, guard, or duty, and you abandoned your post with no proper authorization - thus intentionally abandoning your guard, watch, or post - you will be charged with absence without leave.

5. You abandoned your place of duty, unit, or organization so you would not have to participate in field exercises or maneuvers.

If you did this for a period of time, knowing that your absence would be during this period, and you did so with the intent of avoiding both exercises and maneuvers, then you most likely will be charged with absence without leave.

These are just the crude basics of "absence without leave." Many new recruits or potential recruits believe that absence without leave means being gone for a long period of time and not coming back until apprehended. As you can see, the military laws concerning this are far more complex and detailed.

A Guide to Publishing an Ebook on Amazon Kindle, Barnes and Noble and Smashwords

In this post I'm going to try and demystify the ebook publishing process. I've been through it and lived to tell the tale. So here goes. Stand by for a fun ride. It'll be worth the trials and tribulations along the way!

barnes and noble coupon

Ingredients:

BARNES AND NOBLE

Book (preferably in.doc format) - see detailed formatting guidelines below Cover picture (in JPG format, max 1200 pixels high) Short book description (400 characters max) Proper book description (up to about 2,500 characters) About the Author summary Book categories (i.e. Young Adult, Fantasy, etc.) Decision on selling price of book

Method:

Do not attempt to publish your book without ALL the above ingredients. Delay or disaster could occur Ensure you have full publishing rights to the book you are publishing (I know this sounds odd, but if you have signed a contract with anyone, check and make sure...) Log in to Smashwords.com and create an author account if you don't already have one (trust me, there is method in my seeming madness) - complete your author profile Select 'Publish' on your dashboard and complete the page, copying and inserting the various ingredients from above as requested Press 'publish' and wait while SmashWords processes your book (this could take several hours. SmashWords uses a queue which will update to inform you of its progress) When SmashWords has published your book, go to its page (click on book title) and download it to your PC / iPad / Ebook reader. Look carefully at the results and decide whether anything needs reformatting. If so, reformat and resubmit book to queue. PLEASE NOTE - This step is really important and time spent here will saves hours later) Once book is successfully and satisfactorily published at SmashWords, go to Amazon.com (you will need an account at kdp.amazon.com. You will also need an author account at authorcentral.amazon.com) On your 'bookshelf' page (at kdp.amazon.com), select 'add a new title' and complete the form as requested (similar to SmashWords) Submit the book to Amazon and wait while it converts it. You will then be taken to a page where you can select royalty rate and book price. Finally select publish and then wait It will take 24 hours or longer for your ebook to appear in the Amazon Kindle store. This is why it is advised to publish at SmashWords first (to ensure format looks correct). You cannot view or correct any publishing errors at Amazon until after the book is completely published Once book is published, attach it to your author profile at Amazon While book is publishing at Amazon you can publish it at Barnes & Noble in much the same way. Go to pubit.barnesandnoble.com and set up an author account Select 'add a title' and go through a similar routine as at the other sites. It will take up to 24 hours for the ebook to be available at the Barnes & Noble site Market shamelessly!

Exceptions:

You may receive emails from Amazon or Barnes & Noble if there are problems with publishing. Do not ignore these emails. The quicker and more fully you respond to them, the quicker your book will publish. Each email will delay the publishing process by at least a day If you have previous books published at Amazon that you want linking to your author account you can do that at the authorcentral site If there are also physical copies of the books that you are epublishing you will need to email amazon to 'merge their entries'. This can take several days Check back regularly for publishing progress (often the books will appear in the bookstore before they are highlighted as 'published'. Try searching for them on Amazon or B&N)

Detailed Document / Book Formatting:

The best instructions are HERE Seriously, read the guide linked above... In a nutshell, no fonts bigger than 18pt. No multiple lines between paragraphs. Use Word to automatically set up indent and trailing line space on paragraphs. Never use 'tabs'. Don't use lots of different fonts. Don't use odd fonts. Insert all pictures inline. Etc., etc. Seriously, read the guide linked above!!

GOOD LUCK!!

Helpful Information Regarding Immigration Policies in the US

Whether you are marrying someone from another country, adopting a child from another country, or immigrating to the US yourself, there are many considerations you need to take care of so that deportation will not occur. Most individuals appreciate the help of an experienced immigration lawyer, who can walk you through the difficult process and help you avoid any problems.

It is important that you seek the help of an attorney who specializes in immigration law. Immigration lawyers can help you with simple immigration application as well as more difficult issues, such as applying for permanent residence, getting sponsored by an employer, bringing a spouse into the country, marrying a citizen, or being summoned to a deportation hearing in Immigration court. There are several experienced attorneys in Augusta GA Immigration Law who can help you with your questions if you are a resident of Richmond County, Georgia, or hoping to immigrate there.

AUGUSTA GA

If you are considering immigrating to the United States, you may have some questions about whether or not you will be granted immigration status. If you follow immigration laws carefully and obtain the proper requirements, then you (or your family members) usually won't end up getting deported. The USCIS (the US Citizenship and Immigration Services) will be more likely to grant you immigration status based on a number of issues.

The USCIS will look at whether you have been discriminated in your country of origin based on race or religion or whether you qualify for refugee status. They also are more likely to grant you immigration status if you have a close relative who is a lawful permanent resident of the US or a citizen, and if you have a permanent job waiting for you in the US.

The Masters Golf Course Brings Golfers To Their Knees

After a brutal third round of golf at the 2007 Masters golf tournament,
the powers that be at Augusta had some mercy on the competitors and
softened the course for the fourth and final round.

Make no mistake it was the Masters golf course, Augusta National, that
won this most recent golf tournament. Not since the 1950's and 1960's
had viewers seen such a high winning score.

AUGUSTA GA

Little known Zack Johnson eventually won the 2007 Masters with a
score of 1 over par, but the grand old Masters golf course left little doubt
about the real winner.

Ever since Tiger Woods tore the golf course apart by shooting 18 under
par in 1997, the Masters golf course has been criticized as a relic of the
past.

The golf course at Augusta hosted the first Masters in 1934. Bobby Jones
called the tournament the "Augusta National Invitational Tournament"
until 1939.

After Tiger Wood's dismantling of August National in 1997, the
membership has wrought many changes. These changes have been
popularly referred to as "Tigerproofing".

The most notable changes involved lengthening the course, adding a
rough, additional trees, and deepening bunkers.

Several critics, including Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, have voiced
concern. Many are concerned that the changes have robbed the
Masters golf course of it's unique character and charm.

Before the changes, they argue, Augusta National had a unique mix of
holes that required the player to be cautious on one hole and aggressive
on another. Now the players must constantly play defensively, they
argue.

It is hard to disagree with these critics after witnessing this most recent
Masters tournament. The fabled "Augusta roars" were largely missing
from Sunday's back nine.

We think the secretive decision makers at Bobby Jone's course panicked
after Tiger's 1997 romp. They feared that new technology in golf balls
and golf clubs was threatening to render their course obsolete.

But Zack Johnson's 1 over par winning score shows the flaw in their
thinking. Augusta National can still be plenty tough as it showed this past week.
Some of the measures taken were appropriate. Others, such as adding rough and deepening bunkers have robbed the course of it's uniqueness. We hope the next changes restore some of Augusta National's character.

Please, give us back the Masters. The Augusta National golf course won but golf didn't.

An African-American mother 'Mama Johnson' had experienced difficulties all her life during her upbringing. While her daughter 'Dee' who on the other hand had always received quality education from Augusta, Georgia and a superior life. Mama has one other daughter 'Maggie' whom she considers to be less fortunate. Maggie once became victim to a house fire, causing her to be disabled and the scars still remain on her face. Mama has always been saying that her child Maggie is the most generous of all while Dee has always been the bold and confident one.

The story begins when Maggie and Mama have taken all the necessary steps a day earlier in order to welcome Dee.

AUGUSTA GA

Dee has always wanted nicer things. Dee is told to be a bold and beautiful girl with fair skin, who apparently loves her sister but Maggie's less beauty, dark color and less intellectual properties have somehow caused Dee to adopt the superiority complex. Both the sisters seem complete opposite of each other. One is highly ambitious and bold while the other is equally unmotivated. Maggie's Burns have caused her the extreme troubles that she is often found in corners hiding away from the world.

Now as soon as Dee arrives, Maggie and Mama are amazed to see the charm and glory with which Dee has arrived. Dee tells them that she has changed her name now to 'Wangero Leewanika Kemanjo' which appears as some spelling mistakes to Mama.

Dee tries to steal the family's valuable crafts such as quilts and a churn as a memory of heritage from her family and to keep it as a décor in her home. She also laughs at Maggie for putting such valuables for Everyday use.

Mama and Maggie get irritated by Dee's insulting behavior. Mama at one stage becomes outraged and throws the quilt to Maggie's lap declaring that she won't let Dee take it away. Dee also gets frustrated. This is where Mama realizes the value of her dark, disabled daughter's mannerism against her Bold beautiful daughter.

This story is a very nice representative of the African-American social culture that in the pursuit of fame and fortune how aggressive, ill mannered one becomes. While in south the family and its values are important for them. Those who are ashamed of leaving their vales just try to put some traditional heritage for the ornament purpose, in their homes.

Nursing is one of the most noble professions in our society and currently there are far more nursing jobs than there are those qualified to fill them. It's one of the most noble positions any of us can choose as a career. It requires a certain mindset and of course, there are educational requirements that must be met and vary according to your specialty. A. Harrison Barnes, founder of Hound.com and famed career coach says the demand will continue to increase as more people in the medical field prepare for retirement.

Nursing Statistics:
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are current 2.6 million nurses in the United States and account for the largest healthcare occupation.

BARNES AND NOBLE

Many of these nurses continue their educations and go on to fill:
(1) Nurse Practitioner jobs
(2) Clinical Nurse Specialist jobs
(3) Nursing Instructor jobs; and
(4) Forensic Nursing jobs

Further, nurses can choose a level of specialty, such as those working with medical teams that research certain diseases or nurses who are specifically trained to provide not only care for terminal patients, but their families as well. Many nurses prefer a classroom setting and become nursing instructors while others become critical care nurses or pediatric nurses.

The growth rate in the nursing industry through the year 2016 is expected to increase by 48% for nurses working in physician's offices; 33% of nurses who work in the home health care industry 25% for those opting to work in nursing home environments and 17% for those who choose hospitals as their settings. Another important factor, according to A. Harrison Barnes, is the ability to switch professions with just a bit of specific training that complements what the nurse already knows.

The reasons for choosing the nursing industry are as varied as the nurses themselves. Many wish to make a difference in another's life while others are passionate about the medical field as a whole and want a career in medicine. Today's technological advances open a world of possibilities for nurses. Many treatments that traditionally were done in more sterile settings are now being performed in patients' homes. This, of course, explains the need for home health care nurses.

Because of the unique work schedules, many nurses are realizing they can easily work their careers into their domestic lives. It is not uncommon for nurses to enjoy flex time opportunities, part time work schedules that still provide a significant income and there are always those who prefer to travel and become what is known as traveling nurses. Many also opt to enter the military as nurses. This is another way nurses are able to travel while pursuing their careers.

Because there of the current nursing shortage and the fact technology is advancing at rapid rates, there remains a need for both LPNs and RNs in every medical setting. What does this mean for those wishing to pursue a nursing career? It could mean financial incentives as you pursue your education as well as competitive salaries and bonuses for those just beginning their careers upon the completion of their educations. Doctors, clinics, hospitals and other medical arenas are working hard to attract and retain qualified nurses. As a result, nurses are sometimes offered child care expenses, educational incentives and others hard to pass incentives.

Standardization Needed Desperately for All eReaders

It seems that both Amazon and Barnes & Noble were so busy competing against each other that they failed to properly standardize their technologies. Now electronic reading patrons have to decide what they will buy as far as the e-book reader; Nook versus Kindle formats. This is problematic, especially for e-book writers. You see, not long ago, I was contacted by someone in Texas who wanted to buy one of my e-books, and it was an e-book that I had posted at the Barnes & Noble website.

barnes and noble nook color

Unfortunately, this gentleman had a Kindle which did not support the Barnes & Noble Nook format. Yes, there are ways to get around this, for a tech savvy individual, a way to jailbreak the code, or convert it into a PDF, and then take that PDF and convert it back into an Amazon book format. Of course, not everyone is tech savvy, or knows how to do that. Especially people like grandmas who perhaps would like to buy an e-book which is done in a different format.

BARNES AND NOBLE

What we need is complete standardization without regard to the type of e-reader whether it be an iPad, a Kindle, or a Nook. Each format should work on each of the others, and it shouldn't matter which one you start out with, you should be able to read any e-book that you buy regardless of the format. You should be able to download a free e-book, of an out-of-print book, on the Google website, or any e-book from Borders, Barnes & Noble, or Amazon. That's only fair, and we shouldn't make it tough on people.

The same thing goes for all the libraries, all formats should be the same, and we should keep it simple. We should not have people choosing between Beta or VHS, every e-book should work on every device. Because it's simply not fair, especially to the gentleman who e-mailed me, worried that he couldn't buy my book because he had the wrong type of e-reader. Indeed, even though there are ways around this, not everyone knows how to do it, and some people are fearful they might get in trouble if they do.

This is something that an e-book author needs to consider, and therefore publish their e-books in multiple formats. This way they don't accidentally alienate their less than tech savvy readership, who can't seem to make the conversion work. Okay so, I hope you will please consider all this, and the dilemmas of our high-tech e-book reading age. I ask that you think about it. If you have any solutions, comments, or new technologies that are out which might be good for a future article on this topic, please shoot me an e-mail.

Nook Vs Kindle - How Does the New Kindle 3 Compare?

The Nook vs Kindle battle has been raging strong for just about a year now. When the Nook was released last year, Amazon had released it's 2nd generation Kindle. Now that Amazon has released it's 3rd generation, how does the Nook vs Kindle comparison look?

barnes and noble nook ereader

5 Important Kindle 3 Changes- First let's take a look at 5 important ways the new Kindle is different from the old.

BARNES AND NOBLE

Battery Life- The battery can now last for up to 30 days with one charge. The old Kindle was around 2 weeks. Memory- Standard memory allows storage of up to 3,500 books now, vs 1,500 books of the old Kindle 2. Smaller/Lighter/Thinner- The Kindle 3 keeps the same 6" display screen and trims the fat other ways. It's 17% lighter than Kindle 2. Improved Contrast- The display screen shows darker lettering and lighter background. Faster and Quieter Page Turns- There's a 20% improvement in the speed the pages are turned. An important improvement as well is the QUIETER page turns. That has been a downfall of the Kindle 2, or more like a downfall for your spouse trying to sleep next to you reading.

3 Big Differences of the Nook- Although the following features are not the only differences between the Nook and Kindle, these are arguably the most important.

Color/Touch Screen Navigation- The Nook has a 3" color touch navigation screen to surf through your library of books with swiping a finger. The screen also converts to a touch keyboard to help with navigation. Using a web-browser in the window is in beta testing at the moment as well. Book Lending- The Nook allows lending of titles to friends and family with the Nook app, or Nook itself, for up to 2 weeks. The lender cannot use the material during that time. This is unique to the Nook as the Kindle doesn't allow this feature. In Store Reading- There's a new perk for owning the Nook and bringing it to your local Barnes and Noble Stores, namely one hour of free reading of any book available in the B&N library.

5 Big Differences of the Kindle 3- Here are some important differences of the Kindle 3 as compared to the Nook. There are more differences, hence the higher number.

Push Button Technology- The Kindle has always used simple push-button technology, and the newest version is no exception. More Memory- Although the Nook has expandable memory, the Kindle 3 comes with over double the memory capacity standard. Battery Life- The battery life of the Kindle on one charge (wireless off) is 30 days. The Nook's (wireless off) is 10 days. International Wireless Capability- The Kindle works wirelessly at 3G speed in over 100 countries at the moment. The Nook works within the continental US. Lower Price- Both the Wi Fi only and Wi Fi + 3G are less than the respective models of the Nook.

There is a brief, but thorough, comparison of the Nook Vs Kindle 3.

iPad Market Positioning

The iPad is generally positioned as being the "third device" after the personal computer and cell phone, encompassing a variety of uses and functions. It is meant to allow greater utility than a cell phone, while offering more portability than a personal computer. The iPad is positioned as a more convenient and intuitive way of performing a variety of tasks that these devices are used for, such as web browsing, checking email, and looking at photos.

barnes and noble nook

It is also positioned as a better alternative to existing eBook readers, such as the Amazon "Kindle" and the Barnes and Noble "Nook". These products are marketed by online booksellers who have years of experience in selling printed media. Apple is not only positioning its iPad as a superior device with more features than these readers, but is also marketing its iBooks virtual bookstore as an easy and convenient way to purchase content. Despite the fact it does not have same the relationships with publishers and amount of experience in selling books as Amazon or Barnes and Noble, Apple has already proven its ability to deliver digital content and drive high volumes of sales with its iTunes music store.

BARNES AND NOBLE

Although it isn't as powerful as most laptops currently on the market, the iPad is positioned to be superior to "netbook" portable computers. In fact, during his speech unveiling the iPad, Apple chairman Steve Jobs said, with regard to netbooks currently being sold, "...[They] aren't better at anything. They're slow, have clunky displays, and run clunky old PC software. They're just cheap laptops." Despite the iPad's similarity to netbooks computers in that they do not have the computing power of a full-sized computer; the iPad is positioned to be more useful in that it will run software similar to that of the iPhone, which has been widely praised as being useful and an enjoyable experience.

Positioning the iPad vs. Competing Devices
Apple needs to strengthen how it communicates the utility of the iPad device, elaborating on its many practical uses and conveying how purchasing one can be worthwhile to a wide array of consumers. This may be difficult given that it can be used in so many different contexts and that there are alternative products in every instance. As a result, it is important that the iPad be perceived as a device that consolidates the functionality of numerous other devices, rather than be seen as just another device in a marketplace already saturated with single-purpose or limited-purpose Mp3 players, eBook Readers, GPS devices, smartphones, netbooks, etc.

The iPad needs to be positioned as a device that overcomes common complaints of existing alternatives. For example, despite their high volume of sales, many have criticized netbooks for their small screen size and awkward keyboards. The iPad not only has a bigger screen than many netbooks, but it can be oriented in numerous directions to make working on them easier. Apple has done a great job articulating how the user interfaces with the device, showing how the iPad can be tilted vertically or horizontally and internal sensors automatically adjust how the document is displayed.

Apple needs to communicate how the iPad performs better than existing alternatives in areas for which they are praised as well. For example, the Nintendo DS brand portable gaming console has been successful not only with children but with adults too by offering classic games such as Tetris, crossword puzzles, and other applications like "Brain Age" which seek to promote mental clarity by exercising your mind. Like the iPhone before it, the iPad will also offer the same types of programs, but with a larger screen and greater processing power. In addition, because of the decreased cost of developing games for the iPad platform and distributing them digitally, individual titles will be lower in price. I feel that this, in addition to having highly intuitive touch-screen controls, a beautiful display, and motion sensors, means the iPad ought to be positioned more strongly as a gaming device.

I also believe Apple ought to emphasize the ease of using an iPad for not only for email, but also as a word processing device. It is well positioned as a highly mobile computer that can be manipulated without keys or numerous physical buttons, but the company needs to show potential buyers that when combined with the keyboard dock, it is a viable alternative to transporting a bulkier and heavier laptop when working outside the office. Similarly, the iPad also has a VGA adaptor which allows it to output video to an external display. I believe that the company could communicate how this could allow business consumers to use the device as a highly-portable way to display Keynote or PowerPoint presentations.

The Self Publishing Deception

The biggest deception on demand publishers present is that your book will be "made available at over 25,000 bookstores worldwide." They give writers, who are unfamiliar with the industry, a false sense of success. Everyone wants their books inside Borders or Barnes and Noble...but it's just not possible. Let me explain why.

barnes and noble book

Print-On-Demand (or Publish-On-Demand) books are printed as little as 1 book at a time. This means their unit price to print and buy is higher per book. Example. My novel, In The Blood, spans over 330 pages. Because of its length the unit price per book is around . Incidentally, the longer the book, the more you pay for each unit; the shorter the book, the less you pay. Following me so far?

BARNES AND NOBLE

That's just the publishing. Now, there is a shipping fee for each unit...actually, there is a double charge on every shipping for each unit (printed book). When all the necessary fees are applied, the total cost to print and ship one book to anyone is about . A pretty shocking revelation considering that the retail price of the book is set at .97, which is the thriller markets cap for a softbound book. Anything over that would price the book out of the market.

Bookstores want a 55% discount off the retail price, sometimes 65%. Let's say they want 55. The book costs about . That's an .25 discount which means that the bookstore wants to purchase it for .75 per book. Well, it costs the publisher so they would be losing .25 plus profits every time bookstore owners placed an order. On top of that, for some strange reason, Borders and Barnes and Noble thinks they're in the business to make money. So they want profits on top of the .75.

Typically, bookstores want to make about a 5 to 1 ratio on all book sales. That means, if your book costs to purchase from the publisher, they want for each book. If it costs to purchase, they want . Whatever leftover is divided between the publisher, the agent (if you have one) and the author...the author getting significantly less. Makes you nauseous, doesn't it?

A book that is printed at doesn't stand a chance, seeing that there is NO way for the anyone to profit. If the bookstore purchased the book, even in bulk, they would be losing more money than they've earned. So where's all this talk about being "made available at over 25,000 bookstores worldwide" coming from? Dishonest publishers who know the market, know it's not possible, but also know that YOU don't know either of these! So sad.

What that statement simply means is that your book will be placed in the catalogue that all bookstores purchase from (The Ingram Book Group, for example), making them "available" for order. But no bookstore in their right mind will make the gamble, even if the book has bestselling potential. Now, you have a few success stories but they are a vast minority.

The purpose of me exposing this myth isn't to discourage self publishing, but to encourage you to approach it with realistic expectations. Use the self published book to gain attention from targeted audiences (the scope of that topic is another article). If you are already self published, you'll do much better doing direct sales to customers than to try and get shelf space. If your book is any good, it will sell. You just have to be imaginative and sell outside of the box.

Tips For Attending the 2011 Masters Championship

Tips for attending the 2011 Masters Championship in Augusts, GA April 4 - 10, 2011.

The 2011 Masters Championship, golf's most glamorous tournament, begins with practice rounds on Monday April 4th through Wednesday, April 6th and the actual tournament runs for 4 days from Thursday, April 7th to Sunday, April 10th when a champion is crowned. Getting a ticket to the Masters is more difficult to get than a ticket to the Super Bowl, NCAA Final Four or the Kentucky Derby. If you want to attend this year's Masters, the time to plan is now.

AUGUSTA GA

Augusta, Ga area hotels and accommodations go fast. Prices for hotels in and around Augusta are 2 to 3 times higher than other times of the year. If you can find a room nearby and are willing to pay the price, you should make your reservations now. Don't expect to find any rooms within 30 miles of Augusta if you wait until there are only 2 or 3 weeks before the Masters Week begins.

One of the ways to save a little money is to book a hotel in a neighboring city. You might find a perfectly good room 30 miles or more away from the golf course and pay only a fraction of the rates the nearby hotels are charging. There are designated park and ride lots set up in the outlying areas so you can leave your car and take transportation provided during the Masters Champiosnhip week. Parking on Tournament grounds is on a first come first served basis for patrons with proper credentials, but it fills up fast.

Another good idea if you plan on attending this year's Masters is to find a reputable agency that specializes in providing Masters Packages. There are a number of experienced travel agents and sports services that will combine a hotel room, transportation to the event and tickets for one all-inclusive price. Nothing is really cheap, but if you have your heart set on attending this special golf event, you should expect to lay out some serious money.

Masters Tickets for practice rounds are a whole lot less expensive than the actual tournament rounds. For a badge to admit you to 2 days of practice at the beginning of the week, you can expect to pay around 0. If you choose a package deal with hotel and admission for 2 days and nights, prices begin at around ,200 and, depending on the particular hotel, they can run in excess of ,000.

The serious money is spent if you want to see the last 2 rounds of the Tournament on the weekend and stay at a nice hotel. For two days of watching the world's best golfers battle it out for the coveted Green Jacket, you might be set back close to ,000.

If you are flying in from around the country, you should book a flight to Atlanta. It is a little over a 2 hour drive for the 140 mile trip to Augusta National. Other options for nearby major airports are Charlotte, NC which is also about 140 miles away and Jacksonville, FL which is just over 200 miles to the southeast of Augusta.
